Overview

It is 1325 and there is turmoil in England, but the Prophecy of St. Thomas's Holy Oil just might save King Edward II. It is believed that the king who is anointed with the oil will be a lion among men: he will conquer France, unite Christendom, and throw the heathens from the Holy Land. Edward’s reputation has been sullied following his rejection of his wife—Queen Isabella—after which he confiscated her income, exiled her servants, and took away her children. Having escaped her husband and traveled to France, Isabella attempts to negotiate peace with her brother, King Charles IV. Meanwhile, Sir Baldwin de Furnshill, Keeper of the King's Peace, and his friend Bailiff Simon Puttock return from France with an urgent instruction for the King. Before long Baldwin and Simon find themselves at the center of a deadly court intrigue involving the most powerful and ruthless men in the country who will stop at nothing—not the least murder—to achieve their ambitions.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Set in 1325, Jecks's solid 25th Knights Templar mystery (after 2008's The Templar, the Queen and Her Lover) finds Edward II, England's unpopular king, trying to calm his factious nobles and dispel threat of foreign invasion by being reanointed with sacred oil that, according to a prophecy, was revealed in a dream by the Holy Virgin to St. Thomas à Becket. When the oil goes missing, series hero Sir Baldwin de Furnshill and his bailiff friend, Simon Puttock, seek to recover it, traveling from Canterbury to Westminster, with various stops along the way. Since the course of action provides few hints of the unexpected ending, armchair sleuths must read carefully. Despite a somewhat thin plot and mostly undeveloped secondary characters, Jecks does a good job of evoking the brutal and tempestuous society of the period. As an authorial note suggests, he's a stickler for adhering to the historical facts. (Mar.)

    Another Jecks Triumph

The Prophecy of Death is the 25th in the Templar series. I have purchased and read all twenty-five finding each one a great read. Michael is one of my favorite authors and I look forward to each and every new adventure of Sir Baldwin de Furnshill and Baliff Simon Puttock that flows from his pen.
In my opinion, these Medieval Mysteries are a must read.
