Prophesy [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Mark Schwartz
While he may be a central figure in Britain's Asian Underground, Nitin Sawhney sets himself apart from his tablas 'n' breakbeats comrades in pursuit of a musical vision that's at once more personal and more universal. The multi-instrumentalist is at his most ambitious on Prophesy, a sweeping album recorded in venues around the world and featuring more than 200 musicians, which miraculously manages to keep both focus and warmth. Thematically, the album's 15 tracks follow Sawhney around the globe, pursuing his equivocal thoughts about the price of development and technology. Voices ranging from a Chicago cabdriver to an Australian Aboriginal activist to Nelson Mandela ...

Voices ranging from a Chicago cabdriver to an Australian Aboriginal activist to Nelson Mandela counsel caution and sanity in the relentless march toward an ever-accelerated future, even as Sawhney revels in the proximity to his global village neighbors that makes his music possible: "Moonlight," the most extreme example, was recorded in Rio, London, Paris, and Madrid, featuring vocalists Nina Rocha Miranda of Smoke City and rai star Cheb Mami, plus flamenco guitar from Jose Miguel Carmona in Spain. The contradictions drive Sawhney onward, toward the aggressive "Ripping Out Tears," featuring rapper Pinky Tuscadero and a nervous barrage of sawtooth guitars, and the transcendent "Footsteps," sung by a primary-school choir in Soweto. Visiting with artists as diverse as Chicago soul-jazz legend Terry Callier and Cairo popster Natacha Atlas, Sawhney emphasizes the universal qualities of voice and breath, employing acoustic instruments, orchestra, and chorus to mediate the distance and chill of the electronics. The precision and rigor that are hallmarks of Sawhney's work allow for some truly inspired moments of rare grace, such as Callier's acoustic cameo on "The Preacher" and the raga-gospel of the title track. Sawhney thinks globally and acts locally -- and Prophesy is a stunning reminder of just how beautiful a world that can be.
