Chapter One

Do I Need to Do Something IfMy PSA Is Not Normal?

Your PSA is not normal. You've heard all the controversies about the blood test for detecting prostate cancer early, prostate specific antigen (PSA), but you haven't paid too much attention. Now, you need some facts, because it's happened to you.You have no symptoms, no urinary difficulties, no warnings. You went for a routine check and were told you have an abnormal PSA. That verdict opens the possibility that you may have cancer. You are going to be faced with making some very critical medical decisions. The best advice we can give is:
  • Don't be in a hurry to make a decision.
  • Don't do anything until you understand what your PSA reading is all about, what the implications are of possible treatments, and what other alternatives you might consider. Learn about all your choices.
  • Remember that some decisions are irreversible.

You've probably been raised to believe that when it comes to health the doctor knows best. Taking matters into your own hands may violate everything you've been taught. However, it's important in the case of a prostate cancer diagnosis that you study the whole picture and make a decision based on the real facts (rather than the scare of the word cancer) as well as on your own beliefs and lifestyle. Do your homework and get comfortable with all the possibilities and pros and cons before you decide.

During the past few years, a dramatic evolution in the detection of prostate cancer has occurred because of the use of the PSA test and ultrasound techniques. That's the good news.

The bad news is that in many cases, even when these techniques are used in a competent manner, doctors are still unable to distinguish individual patients whose cancers will not progress from those whose cancers will eventually grow and spread. Furthermore, it is no secret that top experts still cannot agree on what is the best and most effective treatment for prostate cancer.

The ramifications of the PSA blood test can take you on a rollercoaster ride of decisions that can drastically change your way of life. The possible aftereffects of the various courses of treatment available are not always clear to most men. There are many ifs, ands, and buts that you need to look into and weigh very carefully before you decide on what is right for you.

With new techniques available for detection and treatment, men have more choices than ever before. This means that decision making is very difficult. Gathering information, studying and digesting the facts, and talking with doctors from different disciplines are important, intelligent, and essential steps to take before making a decision. Treat this information gathering the way you treat buying a new car-check out all the options before you make a decision.
