Prostate: Basic and Clinical Aspects

Overview

The prostate is a crucial and challenging organ to study due to its high incidence of abnormal growth (both benign and malignant) occurring in aging men. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men-a health hazard that demands new approaches for diagnosis and treatment. This book reflects recent advances in prostate research and covers the field as a whole from epidemiology to etiology, including the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of normal and abnormal growth of the ...

Overview

The prostate is a crucial and challenging organ to study due to its high incidence of abnormal growth (both benign and malignant) occurring in aging men. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men-a health hazard that demands new approaches for diagnosis and treatment. This book reflects recent advances in prostate research and covers the field as a whole from epidemiology to etiology, including the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of normal and abnormal growth of the prostate.
Prostate: Basic and Clinical Aspects is organized in three sections. Section I describes trends in the epidemiology of prostatic diseases and their impact on men. Section II covers the current state of knowledge including basic and clinical research on ontogeny and etiology of prostate growth obtained in humans, rat models, or by using in vitro cultured cell lines. The final section addresses diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of benign prostate hyperplasia and prostate cancer.
Basic and clinical researchers and physicians studying prostate cancer will find Prostate: Basic and Clinical Aspects the most complete and authoritative source of data on this important organ.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Robert J. Matusik, PhD (Vanderbilt University School of Medicine)
Description: This book on the prostate is organized into three parts, covering epidemiology, ontogeny and etiology, and diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and cancer of the prostate (CaP).
Purpose: The graying of the population will result in a tripling of the number people older than age of 60 by the year 2020, and because prostatic disease is found most frequently in men older than the age of 60, these epidemiological predictions have warranted new research in this area.
Audience: Students and basic and clinical researchers entering prostatic research will find that this book serves as a handy resource on the status of our knowledge.
Features: Dr. Naz has selected established investigators in the field of prostatic research to write individual chapters as part of this resource book. The authors present the normal prostatic development in the rodent and human where they present an excellent collection of illustrations. They consider the hormonal influences androgens and estrogen; the role of mutations in the androgen receptor in CaP; and the altered balance between proliferation and apoptosis in tumors. The last chapter discusses chemoprevention and both current and future therapeutic aspects of dealing with prostatic disease.
Assessment: This is a good resource on the prostrate that covers the anatomy, biochemical, and molecular biological changes that normally occur and the mechanisms that may be involved in developing BPH and CaP as well as in the progression of the cancer to the androgen nonresponsive state.

Thirteen chapters discuss trends in the epidemiology of prostatic diseases, especially as related to benign prostatic hypoplasia BPH, and their impact on men; the current state of knowledge including basic and clinical research on ontogeny and etiology of prostate growth obtained in humans, rat models, or by using in vitro cultured cell lines; and diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of benign prostate hyperplasia and prostate cancer. Of interest to researchers and physicians working in the fields of prostate cytokines, immunology, and cellular and molecular biology. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
