Protect and serve by Terry Reid is the first book in the Rookie K-9 unit series. The opening scene grabs your attention. It is action packed. A creepy, crazy villain who happens to be her twin brother and he has already killed her dad. I thought the storyline was very interesting in the fact that they were twins and her concern was what she may have the same evil tendencies. You get some conclusion with her brother but there are some questions that remain open and I suspect will be answered in some follow up books in the series. I like the main characters. Shane was a K-9 officer with his German Shephard partner. Gina works with the lead dog trainer who is found murdered. 4 Stars Protect and Serve is the first book in a new series. The series follow new K-9 officers. The head of the K-9 training center is killed. Another trainer is being stalked and attacked by her twin brother. Their is another murder and two other past rookies death ruled a accident. They are assigned to help look into these deaths and accidents. Gina Perry comes home and finds her twin has found her and still wants her dead. Gina is a trainer of the dogs and helps train dogs and police officers to become K-9. She is single. Gina runs for her life to the K-9 center for help and finds her boss dead. Shane West and his German shepherd Bella are out walking when Bella hears something and runs to the K-9 center. Shane finds Veronica dead body and Gina hiding. There is a lot going on in this book. Action, romance, murder and suspense. It is a clean read. Does mention prayer and sometimes we don't think we get answers when we are told no or not yet. It fits into the story very well. I like that Shane has some weakness that he overcomes. I find that he is without his gun a lot while he is supposed to be protecting Gina. I want to read the other books in the series and see who is behind the different crimes. The setting is a small town of Desert Valley close by Flagstaff, Arizona. I was given this ebook Protect and serve to read for free for the purpose of giving a honest reserve by NetGalley and Harlequin.
Intense suspense brought on my intriguing mysteries, murder, and a twin brother out for revenge, mixed with heart melting romance, and furry little rookies as well. The murder mystery seems to be just a case to catch Gina's twin brother, Tim, and bring him to justice after a couple years on the run. The new batch of K-9 officers with their newly trained partners, are ready to help in the case, and protect Gina in the process. But nothing goes as it was planned. Things escalate, suspense, fear, and frustration get palpable, as Tim is not as easy to find, as they thought. In the process, many others face the possible turmoil and tragedy, and accusations are flying around at the police headquarters. Gina has felt the attraction to Shane since the beginning of the K-9 training started. But knowing he will be gone in twelve weeks, she had been holding off. Now, Shane is guarding her life, protecting her night and day, and it is so difficult to keep the growing feelings in control, especially since his kisses melt her inside out, and his protective arms feel like home to her. During the long hours of protection, they have a chance to get to know each other better, share their stories, and support each other in their faith, as it seems they both are tested during the investigation. I enjoyed the story, it had so many different interesting elements in it. I loved how the author had built the love for the Lord, and their faith in Him into the story. It was inspiring, and uplifting at the same time. The suspense was very well implemented as well. The fear and danger were constant, the events of the story held the tension high, and separating the different crimes happening in the small town was clever. The main murders were left unresolved, as the story continues in the following books of the series. The furry partners, all of them, were commendable, I love how they all were given their own personality, and development, just like the human characters were as well. Well written, clean, enjoyable romance, mysteries, that were not open and shut case, and characters that were a delight. ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
First of all, this book is chilling from the first word! If you’ve watched “The Shining” in the past, then you will know the sheer terror of Jack’s voice calling out “Here’s Johnny!”. Same with Tim Perry’s voice calling out to Gina, his twin sister! He’s found her after 2 years & is out to kill her for reasons unknown. If that wasn’t bad enough, someone also killed Veronica, her boss, at the K-9 dog training facility! What ensues is a story filled with suspense, unsolved crimes, and spine-tingling scenes tempered with cute K-9 officers. Not to mention the two legged kind! Shane West is the kind of hero any woman would be honored to have by their side. But he’s also riddled with doubt and the need to prove himself to his dad & brothers! He’s a rookie K-9 officer wanting to live up to his family’s aspirations for him. He’s hoping he’ll get his big break and be assigned to Flagstaff, Arizona where his dad works for the PD. Instead, his dream is delayed when the police chief assigns him to guard Gina until her brother is caught. As these two work closely together, along with other K-9 officers, to bring Tim to justice and solve Veronica’s murder, they begin a friendship born of necessity & trust. Shane also shows his faith in God, thus encouraging Gina to cling even closer to Him. The author kept me invested in both the characters & the story. I enjoyed getting to know all the other officers as we delved into their lives. While some things weren’t quite solved at the end, the need to find out more makes me want to get the next book in this continuation series! If you are a lover of romantic suspense stories laced with faith and plenty of action, this is the one for you! **I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review which I have provided here. Thank you Terri Reed for the ride of my life & an introduction to some sweet four-legged K-9’s! **
