School Library Journal - School Library JournalGr 4-6-Each book presents factual, easy-to-read information. Content is good, although pages are busy with patterned sidebars, varying typefaces, and black-and-white and color illustrations and photographs. Making Laws poses the question: What if kids want to ban school on Fridays? Donovan takes readers through the entire process of how that idea might turn into a legislative bill that could become a law. Protecting America includes an introduction to the armed forces, Border Patrol, FBI, CIA, FEMA, bioterrorism, and the work of embassies overseas. With a post-September 11 slant, this volume offers current, well-organized material. Friendly Foes traces the history of the Democratic and Republican parties in the U.S. The chapter on differences between them, including issues of spending, taxes, gun control, and the role of government, is especially clear. A final chapter deals with minority parties throughout history. Overall, students will find these titles worthwhile.-Linda Beck, Indian Valley Public Library, Telford, PA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
