Children's LiteratureBy the year 2025, one-fifth of the species currently on the Earth will be extinct. This shocking fact is one of many from this book, part of the "Global Citizenship" series. It begins not with shocking facts, but the vocabulary necessary to understand what is meant by environment. Vocabulary is the best thing about this book—not simple words that are easily defined, but words that will appear often in the news. It also touches on all aspects of the environment, from ecosystems to atmosphere. The main goal of the book, however, is not to educate kids about science, but to make them more responsible citizens. To this end, the book is filled with ideas on how to protect the environment. Some of the ideas are more feasible for kids to do than others, but it does make kids think about how to act. As a reference tool, it is excellent, containing both a glossary and index. It is visually pleasing with color pictures and different text types and it also would be easy to use in a lesson on the environment. 2004, Smart Apple Media, Ages 9 to 12.
