But there's far a darker business going on in the background—a major split compromising the Assassins' Guild, which furnishes security and law enforcement to the whole continent. Tabini's consort's own father has been barred from court, and may be involved in a new conspiracy against him.
For safety reasons, Tabini wants Bren and Ilisidi to take charge of Cajeiri, and protect him and his young guests. They themselves are very likely targets of whatever's going on, no question of it. So is Cajeiri. But having the targets separated and contained is an advantage.
It's Bren's responsibility to entertain the guests, keep the security problem secret...and let a lonely eight-year-old prince reestablish his controversial relationship with the only other children he's ever met...inside the best security they can manage.

I finished this 14th book in less than a day. So much intrique. The 15th in this series has got to be dynamite. I hope the next book is over 1000 pages. The atevi-human world has, in my opinion, reached critial mass and the next book will tell the tale! Dear Ms Cherryh, what an awesome christmas gift this would make. I have several friends who will be getting a copy if it is released in time. - An admirer of 1st-Rate S-F......

We move forward in the Foreigner series; Cajeiri has visitors which of course fall into a political crisis. Tatiseigi is cooperative (what happened here). We get more information on the subtleties of atevi associations and attachements. This is the second book in the fifth 3-book series, so we can expect a third book bringing us a bit of conclusion, but the Foreigner series has several issues established earlier, so it shows no sign of running out of steam.

If you have not read any of the Foreigner novels, don't start with this one. (Start with book one and read all of them.) This book is pure delight, but the characters and the situations will be a lot more fun is you understand why certain statements are made. Such as not blowing up a bedroom. This is one of the funniest of the series. Yes, it has lots of complex intrigue, but the comic relief makes it three times better.
I enjoyed seeing the world throught he eyes of the human children who've never seen a tree or held a rock. Book three skips six months in time from book two and we never saw this through Jase's eyes. The children's sense of wonder and adventure is so ... normal? We forget that life on a space station will be so different than what we're used to on a daily basis. I have questions that I won't mention about the children's experiences because I don't want to spoil anything for anyone else.
On the political front, we learn some important new information. Oh my. When we least expect it! The thing that scared me is that I'm falling for Uncle Tati?

This is the 14th book in C.J. Cherryh's Foreigner series, which is my all-time favorite science fiction series. This is not a novel you can pick up and read without reading the novels before it, but there are 13 other wonderful books awaiting you.
In this novel, Cajeiri's young friends from the ship come down to the planet for his birthday, and of course Bren and Ilisidi are in charge of the group's entertainments.
I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys well written books with well-developed characters.

A VERY excellent read. C.J. Cherryh does an amazing job of portraying the Atevi yet again in this 14th novel,
identifying how very much alike, yet different they are from ourselves. In this novel politics are getting rather
heated, and C.J. Cherryh does a masterful job of leading us every step of the way. I cannot wait for the next
book to come out because with the lead-up that this last book ended with, it'll be a real scorcher of a story.
