I barely read 10 pages of this book. It has a lot of unnecessary foul language. I was very disappointed with this book.

I will not read this book based on the review of foul language. Thank u to whoever alerted me to this. Our world needs a bit less crudeness in it.

I downloaded this book for free when it was available and I have to admit that I was really surprised at how good it was. It took me a long time to get to like Jane as a character, rough and tough, chain smoking alcoholic with an acidic tongue. I really didn't know if I'd like her but then you find out what happened to make her that way and you understand her as a person and thus, like it. I read a review saying that they only read 10 pages and disliked the foul language. Well in my opinion it takes more than 10 pages to decide if you like a book or not. I always give it until page 50 to decide if it's worth my time and by that point, yes, yes it was. My gut told me who the bad guy was but then several red herrings where thrown into the mix. I wish that the ending had been a little different but if had been what I wanted then there probably wouldn't be the series now would there? Anyway, this book, you need to give it time... time to get into the plot, time to fall in love with the characters but in the end it was brilliant and I've already recommended it to several people.

Laurel Dewey writes a good book--the plot is firm, the whodunit keeps you guessing, the main character (Jane Perry) is flawed, but shows signs of redemption and a warm heart, and the byplay between Jane and Emily (the 9-year-old victim/survivor) is done well. Even though I guessed who the bad guy was fairly early on, I still had some doubts because Dewey handles that well with some red herrings. All that said, I have a few problems with this book: (1) in the beginning, words are missing, leaving you a little discombobulated; (2) there are some grammatical and other errors throughout that could have been caught with good proofreading; and (3) Dewey has a distracting (bad) habit of switching points-of-view (POV), not just in the same chapter, but in the same paragraph. Many, many times, I had a problem trying to figure out who was speaking/thinking what. Sometimes, two characters were even speaking in the same paragraph. I might have given this book another star, if not for that. Even so, I will go on to read the second book in the series, and hope the author has corrected this malady in her writing style.

One can't expect too much from a free book, so I was more than pleasantly surprised at the story line, characters, and suspense.
If you don't like the language, grow up.

This could have been a good book. It took me forever to get into the book because of all the glaring errors though. CONTAINS SPOILERS: Bill Stover is supposed to have a secret addiction to meth which has shrunk his 210 lb. build to 175 lbs. and left him with a persistent rash, yet no one (except the police)is supposed to have noticed this. That's why he agrees to work with the police because they said they'd keep his good reputation in tact. He also knew ALL the top people in the mob. That's not the way it works. Jane, the main character opens her refrigerator to find nothing but some decaying fruit which her brother had delivered a couple days "after the incident". She's only been away from work for 10 days so that fruit sure went bad fast. Since when is saying third floor broken English? I don't think you can say that in broken English. This woman was supposed to be speaking broken English yet when Jane gave a long explanation of why she should or shouldn't shoot someone, the lady understood all of it. This author must have felt she needed to make the book longer by adding all kinds of cliches and adjectives. Also, one of the sentences read, " Emily dragged two large pillows off the bed and started back when she hear the front 10:00 p.m. in bright red neon." That obviously makes no sense and must have been two or more sentences that got combined. With good editing that wouldn't have happened. The main character is supposed to be this strong cop yet she still does what her abusive father tells her to do. She's supposed to be very smart and she hates her father for all the abuse he has heaped on her so I find it hard to believe she would allow him in her life. She promised to protect her brother, which again, would mean getting the father out of their lives. Jane does so many things that there is no way she would still have a job. She's a very unlikeable, heavy drinking, over the top swearing, violent person. I realize this is fiction but it should still be believable.

The storyline was fantastic! I really enjoyed the twists and turns presented in the story. However I found myself shaking my head at times upon coming across errors in the text, characters that seemed to be hastily thrown in the story-line and so forth. Some of these are errors that even an amateur editor should catch let alone a good one. I loved the story but I think Dewey should have spent more time on in-depth character development and possibly done more research to give her story to a more life-like feel. Dewey could quite possibly become a best-selling fiction writer but first, FIND THAT EDITOR!!!

I love a heroine with some rough edges. Jane's heart is in the right place but she definitely has "issues." But like others who have reviewed this book, I am heartbroken for this author because she SO deserves a decent editor. I have two others in the series that I haven't opened yet because the errors in this first one were so glaring and so infuriating.

The story is involving and it kept me reading, but the main thing that kind of ruined it for me was the misuse of words, inept metaphors and just plain poor grammar. I guess after reading masters like Robert Parker and yes, even John Grisham, poor writing like this doesn't work for me, even when there's an interesting storyline. Please get yourself a good editor (if there are any more of those around), Miss Dewey, and I guarantee you'll find yourself at the top of the mystery bestseller list, possibly with a bigger publisher.

This is literally one of the best books I've read in a LONG time. The main character, Detective Jane Perry is as real as she can get. She comes alive on the page as does the child, Emily Lawrence, she is hired to protect from a killer. Laurel Dewey has woven a tight, engrossing crime thriller with an original mystical touch that sets this story apart from other books in this genre.
The dialogue is crisp and clever, the story moves fast and I was kept guessing until the final pages as to who the criminal mind was.
Yes, there were a few format/text issues, which other reviewers have brought up. But I've seen those same issues in Lee Child books, Patterson and the like. It certainly was not disruptive to the flow of the book for me. And as far as the language in the book, I truly did not notice it. It fit the main character and the others who use the language. The story certainly would not have been as real if the characters did not use the language they use.
Protector is a five star read and I cannot wait to get Dewey's second book, Redemption. I also pre-ordered the third in the series, Revelations today.

I have just finished reading this book and found it absorbing, provoking, challenging, gritty and satisfying. When I finished it, all I could say was ¿Wow! What a book¿! The plot is fast moving and exciting, with many twists and turns but the stories behind the story, the emotional upheavals, the psychological impacts, and the tantalizing threads of metaphysical unfoldings are very powerful and grabbed me on many different levels. All the characters are well drawn, giving clear pictures of their personalities, but Jane, the Protector and Emily, the silent witness, are fascinating and really pulled me into the depths of their challenges. I found myself eager for them to win through and overcome their personal fears, flaws and tragedies. To me, that was equally as important as solving the intricate murders. This book defies classification in the normal genres. I think it is starting a genre of its own because it covers a variety of bases: thriller, murder mystery, metaphysical tingler, plus psychological and emotional impact. At the end, the unlikely winner is love - the love of one human being for another. I could not put this book down, and highly recommend it to anyone who likes substance to their reading. *****

Foul language....... who cares! Only the stuck up snoty people, if your going to write a review talk about the story line of the book too, not just the language when i came and got this book i had to through 6 pages to find an actual good review. Thhis is a good book even if it does have a couple curse words here or there the story line was good and the charactors were good it was just a good book all around

I bought Protector after my sister raved about it. She was right. I was captured from the first chapter and didn't want to put it down. Laurel Dewey is a wonderful writer with a great style that kept me guessing all through the book. The big twist on the final few pages reminds me of the shock I felt at the end of the movie 'The Sixth Sense.' If you are looking for a book that has a great story, real- life characters, riveting dialogue and spine-tingling suspense, buy this book. You won't be sorry!

Many times I will decide if I will read a book depending on the customer reviews. Whenever I read reports of foul language, I shy away from the book. I don't believe having foul language in a book makes it good reading, as a matter of fact, just the opposite.

This is the book that got me HOOKED on the Jane Perry mystery series. I'm not joking when I tell you that this series is absolutely addictive.
Yes, as some people have found it overly necessary to mention, there IS a lot of foul language in this book. BUT this story is VERY intense (the whole series is) and it features a very damaged but deeply compassionate main character (Jane Perry) who is smart, savvy, funny, irritating, frustrating and HUMAN.
Laurel Dewey's writing is superb and kept me turning pages well into the night. These stories are NOT just "another murder mystery." They are filled with wisdom, insight and incredible depth for the human spirit. To write off a book of this caliber because of "language" is absolutely ridiculous! Buy this series and be swept up in Jane's world!

Spellbinding! Enthralling! Mesmerizing! Riveting! Gripping! Engrossing! Captivating! Protector is so well written that one is instantly transported into the story. Jane & Emily¿s emotions, thoughts, & expressions become so real you feel as if you know them personally. I could not put it down once I started. Find a omfortable spot, make sure you have time to spare, relax, and get ready as Protector draws you in deeper & deeper into this powerful & unforgettable novel! I was given Protector for my birthday and once I started it, I could not put it down. The story is great but it's the characters that rank this book above the rest. Laurel Dewey's dialogue is a joy to readÑheartbreaking at times and cutting to the bone at others. The relationship that develops between Jane Perry and the child, Emily Lawrence, is nothing short of brilliant. Laurel Dewey deserves all the kudos in the world for creating such an intense and compelling debut.

Jane Perry is a hard-working detective who has problems of her own. She is dealing with the murder cases of what seems to be average, everyday family members. But as the plot gets more involved, so does Jane's role. Her character is well-developed, and I like how Dewey used little Emily to actually help Jane see more about herself and her own shortfalls. The language used is harsh at times but not surprising for the characters in the story. Like it or not...it seemed to be a part of them. All in all I enjoyed this book and the rollercoaster ride I was on while I read it. Dewey did a great job at making me want to get my own revenge on a few of the characters in the story. You must read the book yourself to find out who...I'm sure you'll want to plot your revenge for them too! Lisa Tortorello - author of My Hero, My Ding

I thought this was a great book. While there was cursing, it wasn't excessive. It is just a great book with characters and a story that draws you in and keeps you involved without having the overly happily ever after ending. I look forward to reading more in the Jane Series.
