Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Protists are one-celled microscopic life forms. They may have traits of animals, plants, or both. Although they are small, they are not simple. Charts and diagrams are needed to show their many parts. The live in the soil and in water; and they thrive in both light and dark environments. Protists are found in many shapes. Some have hair, whips, or horns. Tiny algae, golden algae, brown algae, and red algae are shown and described. The process of raising seaweed is explained through diagrams and photographs. Sometimes molds cause devastation, such as the potato blight in Ireland in the 1800s. Slime molds, a mixture of molds, amoebalike protists, mushrooms, and slugs grow in damp places taking part in the decaying process. Unusual and harmful protists are also included. This book contains charts showing the Classification of Life and Groups of Protists. It also includes a glossary, a bibliography, and an index. It is a good introductory resource for middle grade students. Part of the "Kingdom Classification" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.

The main text meanders through the loaded pages providing background information, while visuals with italicized captions provide examples and detail. Scientific terms are often defined in the text and used again in later pages. Each spread focuses on a single aspect of the life-form and either moves through the life cycle or presents variations of the classification. Final spreads examine beneficial and harmful varieties.
