Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A resident of Provence for 20 years, Jones draws on her intimate knowledge of the area to provide a glimpse of the art of living as practiced there. Brief essays, along with local proverbs, recipes, and excerpts from such artists and writers as Van Gogh and Colette, are grouped by season and complemented by lavish photographs that capture the seasonal moods. Unfortunately, the almanac style does not lend itself to providing insightful information, and Jones's prose is too characteristic of the canned tour guide's spiel and too self-assured to be compelling. A perfect coffee-table book--beautiful, undemanding, and insubstantial. Not recommended.-- William R. Smith, Johns Hopkins Univ. Lib., Baltimore
Alice Joyce
Provence boasts both a fascinating history and a unique geography. Jones is well versed in these realms, with an intimate knowledge arrived at through 20 years of living there and teaching the culture of the area to visiting Americans. In a series of essays, she highlights local treasures (museums, crafts, and picturesque villages) while quoting lyrical passages from such sources as Colette and Van Gogh, all to sketch out colorful seasonal pictures of the place. Lush color photographs portraying the area's riches just may be capable of converting more than one armchair traveler into an actual visitor to this southern French paradise. If not, recipes for Provencal dishes will provide stateside sustenance. Includes addresses and phone numbers useful to anyone planning a visit to the gardens, restaurants, country inns, or other featured points of interest.
