Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Tenbit Emiru, MD (Regions Hospital)
Description: Part of the Core Principles of Acute Neurology series, this book reviews general medical topics commonly encountered by clinicians caring for acutely ill neurological patients.
Purpose: It provides a broad overview of the common general medical topics that may be worrisome, emergent, or routine in a critically ill neurological patient.
Audience: Many clinicians with different levels of training and specialization will find this book helpful, particularly those without extensive internal medicine or critical care knowledge. Providers who do have significant experience in these disciplines may use this as a quick reference.
Features: The book begins with a brief overview of how to appropriately triage and quickly assess the need for emergent procedures, identify possible deterioration in a timely fashion, and work up the acutely ill neurological patient with unclear presentation. It then reviews general critical care topics, starting with principles of anatomy and physiology followed by practical applications. Tabular illustrations, flowcharts, and multiple schematics concisely provide important diagnostic criteria, treatment guidelines, clinical exam findings, patient assessment algorithms, and recommended protocols. Relevant references include landmark publications. Chapters are clearly written, short, and concise.
Assessment: This is a short introduction to issues commonly encountered in the critical care of neurological patients, but it omits many topics. Among areas lacking sufficient emphasis are acute respiratory distress syndrome, severe infections, septic shock, analgesia, and sedation. Those who need a detailed overview of the pathophysiology of organ system response in acutely ill neurological patients and a detailed review of common critical care concepts may not find this brief book as helpful.
