I have to preface this by saying that I love science fiction books from the forties and fifties. I love the style of writing, the clarity of purpose, the truly ingenious imaginations, the freeness of them. They were written before you had to pad a novel out to 500 pages to get a company to publish it. They feel pure to me.
PROXIES OF FATE is a very satisfying book because it captures all of that, perhaps because it is set in The Great Depression. There is a sense of pure adventure here, coupled with intellectual/thoughtful inner monologues that I thought were all but forgotten in our bloggy world. I forgot I was reading, and I was in the story.
There are dueling characters here, and my favorite was The Dragon King, hands down: monstrous body, boyish face, injured innocent heart, unspeakably violent. Just thrilling. If you are a fan of unfettered stories, I do recommend this book.
