Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a pocket guide to provide an easy to read, quick reference for key psychiatric clinical information. These are worthy objectives given the volume of new information that is made available through basic and clinical research on a daily basis. The book provides an easily accessed, readable understanding of basic clinical information.
Audience: It can serve as a quick and ready resource for mental health students and beginning mental health practitioners. The author is an advanced practice board certified nurse with expertise in mental health and hence seems to be a credible authority.
Features: The book provides salient mental health key clinical information on basics such as growth and development, neurological system, theories of personality development, DSM-IV categories, communication techniques, assessment tools, related interventions and therapeutic treatment modalities including psychotropics, crisis intervention techniques, labs/tests, and client/family education among other clinical information. The author should be commended for covering key mental health clinical features in this small easy to carry pocket guide. The various tables, graphics, color, waterproof and resuability aspects are all unique features that are valuable. The illustrations are appealing.
Assessment: This will be valuable and extremely useful to mental health students and beginning practitioners as a quick reference guide in the clinical setting. The clinical pearls will assist students in their critical thinking for applicability of theory in clinical practice. The handheld pocket guide also provides an "always-at-hand review of psychiatric content for NCLEX or other exams." I would recommend purchase of this handheld clinical companion.
