Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Jayalakshmi Jambunathan, PhD, MSN, MA, BSN, BSc (University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)
Description: Using a nursing process framework, this fourth edition psychiatric nursing book emphasizes assessment, therapeutic communication, neurobiological theory, and pharmacology within the context of current theories and practice, nurse-client relationships, social and emotional concerns, and psychiatric disorders. The previous edition was in 2006.
Purpose: The purpose is to present sound nursing theory, therapeutic modalities, and clinical applications across the treatment continuum. The editor has met the stated objectives by discussing interventions in the context of theoretical framework. Interventions focus on all aspects of client care, including communication, client and family education, and community resources, as well as their practical application in various clinical settings.
Audience: The book is intended for students and maintains a strong student focus. However, it can be used by beginning practitioners as well.
Features: The first of the book's four units addresses current issues in psychiatric nursing including neurobiological theories, psychopharmacology, psychosocial theories, and therapy, all of which can provide a basis for understanding mental illness and treatment. The second unit, on building the nurse-client relationship, provides the basic elements essential to mental health nursing practice. The unit on social and emotional concerns covers legal and ethical issues, anger and aggression, hostility, abuse and violence, and grief and loss. The last unit covers the major psychiatric disorders identified in the DSM-IV TR. Many features such as clinical vignettes, drug alerts, cultural considerations, Internet resources, self-awareness and therapeutic dialogues offer unique ways to deliver information. The many illustrations (color art) in the book are attractive features. The book is concise and can be strengthened by adding content on forensic nursing, more on sexual assault, evidence-based research, etc.
Assessment: This fourth edition, comparable to other books on psychiatric mental health nursing, might be useful to students and beginning practitioners because of its concise nature and the direct writing style.
