Overview

This fifth edition of Psychiatric Nursing continues to set the standard for psychiatric mental health nursing practice established with the publication of its first edition in 1979. The authors have written this book with three points in mind: These are complex and changing times in our field of knowledge and practice; psychiatric mental health nurses must be prepared with critical thinking and clinical judgment skills to address clients with dual diagnoses and comorbidities, and to work effectively in community-based as well as hospital settings; and comprehensive and contemporary theory and processes are best learned when presented in a clear, clinically relevant style.

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some two- and four-color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Elaine M. Scorza
This fifth edition covers a wide spectrum of issues, activities, and modalities involved in the practice of psychiatric nursing across the lifespan. The authors have identified the purpose of the book as continuing to set the standard for psychiatric nursing practice, as they originally intended to do with the first edition published in 1979. In addition, they highlight advances in the field, encourage the engenderment of critical thinking related to practicing with excellence, and do so in the context of complex and changing times. This book is written mainly for nursing students, both beginning and advanced, and also serves as a superb work for nurses already in practice. The authors are established professionals, and deliver their work with thoughtful and timely vigor. The book offers a rich source of information for practice to build upon. The illustrations well reflect the integrative quality of the book and strongly reflect the authors' stated objective of promoting critical thinking in the reader. Consistently, the variety of timely references reflect thoughtful, current, and scholarly support of the concepts presented in each chapter. I highly recommend it for individual, library, and bookstore stock. The overall appearance of the book is excellent and easy to read. The index makes finding particular items easy, and it enhances its use as a textbook. Unique features, such as the rich use of key concept boxes in a number of areas, medication cards, and the use of a detailed as well as brief index, make it a valuable resource.
