Overview

The Third Edition of this trusted learning resource is your guide to understanding the biological, psychological, and sociocultural aspects of mental illness -- as well as the nurse's role in assessment and care of the psychiatric client. Using the bio-psycho-social model, grounded in nursing theory and research, you'll examine the underpinnings of mental illness as well as today's most advanced clinical interventions. You'll quickly gain competence, develop communication skills, sharpen your diagnostic abilities, identify outcomes, and evaluate basic interventions.

The book contains predominantly two-color illustrations, with some black-and-white and color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Eileen Trigoboff
This text provides an in-depth examination and exploration of each topic in psychiatric nursing in its entirety, with abundant resource materials included. The purpose is to provide a theoretical and informational knowledge base to assist students in sharpening critical thinking skills as well as clinical judgment abilities. It seeks to integrate research based nursing management of the psychiatric patient into the education of mental health care providers and succeeds admirably. This is a needed and extensively informative resource. This book is written for psychiatric nursing faculty and students and is also useful to the general practitioner and the specialist as well. Both editors are well known in major clinical areas of psychiatric/mental health nursing with established expertise in the clinical application of the treatment modalities discussed. The color illustrations appropriately vary from basic to intricate and portray sometimes very difficult concepts exceptionally well. Each chapter has critical thinking challenge questions and practical patient teaching materials. The references are current and diverse. It is thorough, complete, user-friendly, and functional for clinicians and students alike. Overall this text is nicely organized and presented. It includes current practice issues that are difficult to find in other contemporary publications (i.e., depot antipsychotic medications may be given subcutaneously). It is valuable as a comprehensive primer and as a clinician's resource.
