Overview

Featuring a more concise and less expensive format, this innovative series presents a clear alternative to existing nursing course books which continue to increase in size, scope, and price. Each textbook in the series is carefully designed to cover course material in enough detail to satisfy faculty and help students excel on their national board exams. Reader friendly,faculty-approved,and highly affordable, the McGraw-Hill Nursing Core Series gives students what they must know—in sufficient but not overwhelming detail—to excel in the classroom and score high on the NCLEX exam.

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some two-color illustrations.

Addresses all disorders, related issues, and basic science principles that the student or nurse working with clients with psychiatric conditions must know. This is done in an unusually engaging format loaded with case studies, clinical vignettes, and learning aids. Here too, the emphasis is on just that amount of material that will enable the student to understand key concepts and apply them effectively in the clinical setting. Margin notes are employed to highlight important concepts and annotated references provide the student with qualified leads for further research. Includes nursing management of special populations - elderly, mentally retarded and developmentally disabled, chronic mentally ill and homeless mentally ill, violence in the family, coping with pain, and much more.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Eileen Trigoboff, RN, CS, DNS (Buffalo Psychiatric Center)
Description: This is an introductory textbook on psychiatric/mental health nursing in which all the basic aspects of psychiatric illness, treatment components, and sociocultural issues of care are covered.
Purpose: This introduction to psychiatric/mental health nursing is also intended to be an informative source on this specialty area to clinicians entering the field from other areas or needing information on psychiatric symptomatology or medications. These worthy objectives are well met.
Audience: This book is intended as a basic text for the undergraduate student and as a reference for practicing professionals in a variety of clinical settings. Some chapters are very technically complex for an introductory text, although generally the writing is at an appropriate level. The editors and the contributors have extensive experience in the field.
Features: Margin notes and an annotated reference list in each chapter further increase the book's value as a resource. Thorough coverage of complementary modalities of treatment is an especially nice feature. The illustrations are anatomically correct with a great deal of information but could be clearer in explaining a single point as opposed to encompassing a number of processes.
Assessment: This book is a useful resource for both the student encountering mental health for the first time in a clinical setting and for clinicians of any discipline seeking facts and clarification in the field of psychiatry.
