Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Michelle R. Birdsell, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This book consists of 500 multiple choice questions and answers designed to parallel the topics and degree of difficulty found on the USMLE Step 2.
Purpose: The book is designed to provide a comprehensive and convenient instrument for self-assessment and review of general psychiatry. As medical education places more importance on standardized test scores, demand for resources such as this continues to increase.
Audience: Although the authors state that the book is intended for medical students, psychiatric residents, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals, most of the material presented is too elementary for residents and psychiatrists. However, the book will prove useful to medical students during their general psychiatry clerkship and as preparation for the USMLE Step 2. The authors, who have experience in both clinical psychiatry and medical student education, are credible authorities.
Features: The book contains 500 multiple choice questions. Some of the clinical vignettes are somewhat shorter than those typically found on psychiatry mini-boards and on the USMLE. Each question is accompanied by a paragraph answer, containing useful information about the correct answer as well as information about the other, incorrect choices. This allows the reader to cover multiple study points with each question. Each paragraph answer also lists a specific page reference to a psychiatry textbook. The books are those commonly used in psychiatry education and are found in most medical libraries. The chapters are organized by diagnostic categories, and a table of contents allows one to locate specific areas of interest.
Assessment: This is a very useful book for medical students completing their psychiatry clerkship and/or studying for the USMLE Step 2. It covers a broad range of relevant topics in psychiatry in a convenient format. This new edition is warranted because psychiatry research continues to grow and there is student demand for the most current information.
