Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: William Miles, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This small, paperback book is intended as a way to rapidly review key concepts encountered by medical students during their core psychiatry rotation. It is composed entirely of a question and answer format. This is the second edition; the first edition was published in 1997.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to give medical students ready access to the important information they will need to master during their psychiatry clerkship. It is also intended to be used as a review source for the USMLE Step 2 Exam.
Audience: The book is written specifically for medical students who are rotating through psychiatry or studying for the Step 2 exam. However, anyone in the mental health field might find it a useful review source.
Features: The book is composed of many short chapters, with each chapter covering a particular area in psychiatry (examples include: mood disorders, eating disorders, psychiatry and the law, medical ethics). Each chapter is composed entirely of short questions and their respective explanatory answers. The range of topics covered is quite extensive, and the material is presented in a clear, concise, and well-organized fashion. There are no illustrations, but none are needed in a book of this type. An excellent glossary of psychiatric terms is included, as well as a thorough index. No references are given.
Assessment: This is an excellent little review book. Unlike most books of this type, this book is not composed of board-like questions (with their long, dry answers and explanations), but instead composed of short, concise questions and answers dealing with practically every topic a medical student might need to learn while on psychiatry. Because of this format, this book would be more practical on a busy rotation than a cumbersome board-review book. The range of topics covered in this small book is quite impressive. As Course Director for the psychiatry clerkship at my institution, I am going to recommend this book to my students.
