***Mature themes***

I killed my first victim at thirteen years old - my age, not his. He was going to rape me, him and a couple of his friends. And so, I killed him.

And then... I killed again.

And again.

At seventeen, I'm killing four to six times a year - maybe more. Don't stress out. I only go after the pedophiles and rapists. There are more olut there than I could cover in a lifetime.

Saying I did this on my own would be selfish. Enforcing justice holds a glory all its own. But now, my lifelong friend and backup, Deegan, has been arrested. I have to decide if I want to give myself up and take his place or leave him with all the damning evidence. I don't want to stop killing. But if I let him take the fall, I can't kill anymore. And I need to keep doing that.

The worst part of it all? I love him.

If Dexter were female and had a partner... After reading the synopsis for this book, PSYCHO INSIDE ME, how could I not want to read it? I've never read a book like this before. Once finished, there was so much for me to process I needed time to think about everything that happened and what it all meant to me. I'm still not sure I can explain it all. Cassie is almost raped right after her thirteenth birthday, and her friend Deegan stops it from happening. He's there when the would-be rapist is accidentally killed by Cassie and hides the body. And so they share this terrible secret. Every year, right after her birthday, Cassie puts herself in more and more danger to catch a rapist and kill him. And Deegan always happens by to help her out. Until he's caught, and Cassie has to decide what she's going to do. I didn't understand the relationship between Deegan and Cassie. It sounded like they had grown up together but acted more like strangers when they were around each other. Cassie obviously had a crush on Deegan and hoped her feelings would be reciprocated, but Deegan told her they couldn't act like they were "together" or else they would be suspected in the murders. If they knew each other well, wouldn't it look more suspicious if they acted like they DIDN'T know each other? They ran together everyday, so I didn't understand his reasoning. I understood what happened with the first death, and even the second death, but after that I started thinking about whether they were serving out justice or turning into the very monsters they hated. And although this is what I consider a dark contemporary novel, the science fiction part of me started wondering what if the consequences of their actions rippled into something worse than what they were trying to change? What if another fate had been in store for those rapists? It's a lot to process.  Definitely an interesting story, PSYCHO INSIDE ME will have you on your toes the entire time and will swiftly have you thinking about what constitutes right or wrong and what would you do if you thought you could get away with the very same thing. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I've never read anything quite like this. Was it good? Yes. Was it shocking? Yes. Was it offensive? No. Did I like it? Yes. I was surprised with the subject matter and how the characters went about their killings, but the way the author presents the story you get away from the shock and start to really understand the persons in a different way. Vigilante fiction. Original in many ways. A story that could have been like any other teen killer story was given reasoning and a sense of purpose. Do I recommend that people do what Cassie and Deegan did, absolutely not, but how many of us have heard about a sexual assault on the radio, read about it in the news or saw it on the tv and thought that these sick people should die? Yeah, that's what I thought. The author brings to the forefront the effects of sexual assault. The fact that even those that report it to a parent are turned away by the very person(s) that should be doing everything they can to keep their children safe at all times. The fact that there are people out there ready to exploit others sexually. The fact that there are people that take advantage of their leadership position to victimize those younger than them sexually. The fact that there are people who place themselves in positions of trust and time and time again victimize the victims until they just give up on life altogether. Sexual assault is running rampant through our world, no place is safe but the best thing you can do is to educate friends and family about how to keep themselves from being victims and to be strong enough to report it if it does happen to them. The story follows Cassie through several years, from her first accidental killing to her last purposeful one before she stops for certain reasons. Cassie and Deegan are mentally dysfunctional and I don't think that Cassie would have gone the route she did if he wasn't in the picture. Deegan guided her in the beginning and from there a monster was created. This was a great read and I understand the reason why the author wrote it after reading her notes at the end of the book. I hope that she was able to calm at least some of the demons that keep her awake at night. I recommend this to anyone looking for a contemporary, original read. I do not recommend this for teens under seventeen though because I would not want them to get the wrong idea of how to take care of a bad situation. Not everyone out in the world is bad, there are resources, but the biggest thing is to educate your loved ones.

Doesn't the synopsis just beg you to read the book? I know it did for me. I haven't read of many thirteen year olds who can say the've killed before. Cassie is a preacher's daughter, who is subjected to almost getting raped. It's this moment in her lie that changes everything including herself. She's no longer the sam person, and you can't blame her. Deegan, an old friend, now becomes her friend, and her partner in crime as they kill people. Of course, there's a lot of drama between the two of them, and they have a very complicated relationship. Together they make up an awesome book. You have to pick it up and try it! I of course give it 5/5!
