Overview

This thoroughly updated, full colour fourth edition of AS Level Psychology has been completely revised to match the requirements of the new AQA-A specification. It has a new focus on the nature and scope of psychology as a science with an emphasis on how science works, and guidance on how to engage students in practical scientific research activities.

The book includes coverage of six key areas in psychology: human memory, early social development, research methods, stress, social influence and abnormality. It retains the thorough content, volume of features and excellent writing style of previous editions with a fully structured layout to improve accessibility. Chapters focus on the application of knowledge and understanding of the text to help students develop skills of analysis, evaluation and critical thinking.

This edition is packed with advice on exam technique, giving students the best chance possible of the highest grades. A whole chapter is devoted to ‘preparing for the AS Exam’ with guidance on how to study and how to pass. Hints and tips on picking up marks are frequent throughout the text as well as constant page references to the summarised content in our companion AS revision guide. However, unlike other A Level textbooks which focus solely on passing the exam, AS Level Psychology, fourth edition is also designed to foster an interest in the study of psychology as a subject. To this end, the book includes an additional general chapter to introduce the theories and explanations that make psychology a fascinating discipline.

AS Level Psychology, fourth edition is supported by our extensive web-based multi-media package, AS Psychology Online. Student resources (available on a subscription basis to all schools and sixth form colleges that adopt the text) have been updated to include even more animations and interactive exercises, as well as relevant podcasts with key figures in Psychology. We also provide teacher resources free of charge to qualifying adopters which include a week-by-week teaching plan, sample essays, chapter-by-chapter lecture presentations, and classroom exercises and activities.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"This excellent new edition of a successful and popular textbook, substantially rewritten, is full of new details, new studies and ideas, all directly relevant to the new specification. Many topics have been updated with current research and new examples and the style is so accessible and friendly. There are also very useful online resources to engage students plus some for teacher use. This is a valuable contribution to the teaching and learning of psychology AS." – Evie Bentley, Advanced Skills Practitioner for Psychology, West Sussex Adult and Community Learning; Chairperson 1999-2002, The Association for the Teaching of Psychology, www.theATP.org.

"This book follows in the tradition of Michael's previous textbooks. The content of the specification is followed faithfully and covered thoroughly; the writing style is interesting and accessible; the examples are relevant and fascinating and the research combines the classic with the up-to-date. Together with the wonderful illustrations, this book brings Psychology to life. Quite simply, an excellent resource for students and their teachers."Diana Dwyer, Head of Psychology, The West Bridgford School

School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Titles in this authoritative set include History of Psychology, The Brain and the Mind, Thinking and Knowing, Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology, and Abnormal Psychology. The entries vary in accessibility and length; there are 6-page introductory articles as well as 28-page essays on more substantive topics. They offer overviews of theories, terms, experiments, and history in an effective manner. There are no entries on individuals but the work of significant theorists is discussed within the articles. Research methods, cross-cultural information, and the relationship of psychology to other disciplines are clearly delineated. Sidebars present case studies, seminal experiments, and brief biographical profiles. Quotes enhance each entry. Informative, captioned, color and black-and-white photographs, charts, maps, drawings, and reproductions abound. The heavy, glossy paper adds to the quality of the reproductions. A set glossary and bibliography are included in each volume. An attractive, useful acquisition for libraries fielding questions on the history and science of the discipline.-Janice C. Hayes, Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
