Our fascination with eating and drinking behaviors and their causes has resulted in a huge industry of food-related pop science. Every bookstore, every magazine stand, every grocery store checkout counter is filled with publications about how to get your child to eat vegetables, how to tell if someone has an eating disorder or, most commonly, how to lose weight. But the degree to which any of these is based on scientific research is very limited. An enjoyable read... Written in a surprisingly personal stlye, this book provided me with a fun and interesting tour of the science behind the way we approach, consume, and are influenced by our food and drink. I was very drawn to the way the author consistently personalized the topics she addressed, ranging from food preferences, to social drinking, weight loss, etc. Despite the fact that it's packed with hard science, and tackles the issues of diet and nutrition from an unusual perspective, the book manages to inform and entertain without lecturing to its readers.
