Editorial Reviews

VOYA
This set is easily the most thorough treatment of terrorism's complexities on the market today. Masterfully edited by Stout, individual volumes include A Public Understanding; Clinical Aspects and Responses; Theoretical Understandings and Perspectives; and Programs and Practices in Response and Prevention. Within each volume, a wide array of academics, clinicians, and activists address the roots and fulmination of terrorism from a variety of perspectives. Child psychologists point out the early role of the authoritarian family in creating terrorists, whereas neoconservatives opine that realism-not psychology-is needed to eliminate terrorists. An African American Muslim delineates his anger with racism, his turn to terrorist activities, and his eventual struggle to leave terrorism behind. Psychologists point out the role that religion, politics, trauma, and psychosis play in terrorist tendencies. Progressive academics indict state-sponsored terrorism. From the Palestinian suicide bomber to Timothy McVeigh, the series takes the average reader inside the mind and circumstances of a "typical terrorist," what makes them so intent on destruction and vengeance, and how society can prevent future terrorist acts. This resource is truly different because it treats terrorism as a complex problem with multiple causes and outcomes, rather than in the facile manner so common to young adult and adult texts. The variety of perspectives is refreshing and honest. Although the text is challenging at times, it should be suitable for students interested in true-crime, international affairs, or upper-grade research. It is highly recommended for public and high school libraries. Index. Charts. Biblio. 2002,Praeger, 1,200p. in 4 vols. PLB
