    TRIPPING THE PSYCHOTROPIC LIGHT FANTASTIC!!

Are you a mental health clinician that needs to know how to properly manage your clients' pharmacological treatment? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Sidney H. Kennedy, Jerrold S. Maxmen, Roger S. McIntyre and Florence Montgomery, have done an outstanding job of writing the fourth edition of a book that is an all-in-one drug resource guide.

Authors Kennedy, Maxmen, McIntyre and Montgomery, begin with a presentation of the general medications, their broad indications and the disorders they treat. Then, the authors discuss standard therapeutic ranges, dosage adjustment for geriatric populations, drug delivery systems and appearances. Next, they look at pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic topics, with an overview where appropriate, of general classification. The authors then describe the clinical conditions that have received FDA approval for each medication. They continue by providing a reasonably comprehensive description of side effects for each drug class and their management. Then, the authors discuss both drug-drug and drug-food interactions. Next, they discuss how these medications influence laboratory tests of blood and urine. The authors continue by exploring drug discontinuation emergent symptoms, preventive approaches, and where necessary management of emergent symptoms. Then, they describe symptoms and signs associated with drug overdose, emphasizing high-risk overdoses and optimal management. Next, the authors address drug use in children and adolescents, women during pregnancy and lactation, and older adults. They continue by addressing relative and absolute contraindications. Then, the authors present recommendations about when to take the medication, what side effects to expect, what to do if a dose is missed, and when to contact the doctor. Finally, they address sequential aspects of treatment.

This most excellent book is written for professionals rather than consumers of mental healthcare. More importantly, this book includes only those drugs currently available in the U.S.
