School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-8Meat-eating dinosaurs and pterosaurs (the creatures that filled the skies over dinosaurs' heads) may be of particular interest to students honing in on prehistoric life for school reports. Despite the dry style of the texts, each book contains much information on its respective subject. Both go into detail about the body structures of the creatures covered. The development of Pterosaurs' wings is compared to that of bats and birds, and the evolution of their bodies for flight enhancement is also described. In Hunters, readers learn how the facial muscles, skeleton, and eyes of a carnivore all enhance its ability to catch its next meal. The illustrations help explicate the text, but aren't particularly notable. Similar information can be found in Helen Sattler's Pterosaurs (Lothrop, 1985; o.p.), Peter Wellnhofer's The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Pterosaurs (Random, 1991), or general dinosaur compilations, but students may also find these two specialized volumes helpful.Cathryn A.
