From the Publisher

"The author certainly covers all material regarding the physical and emotional changes attendant upon puberty."  —Junior Science Books & Films

"Clear, wise, and kind—a major achievement. Treats puberty with a 'whole person' viewpoint."  —Steve Biddulph, author, Raising Boys

"A frank, reassuring discussion of male adolescence."
VOYA
This Australian author, mentor, and counselor recalls what it was like when he reached puberty. Sex education classes were masked in metaphors, and his schoolmates giggled about everything remotely sexual and seemed always to know more than he did. He now hosts Pathways to Manhood wilderness camps for boys and offers a book that does not shy away from discussing genitalia, erections, ejaculations, and more. Quotes throughout the book detail men's memories of embarrassing body changes (pubic hair, acne, voice breaking). One chapter frankly discusses and illustrates the male body on the inside and out. Many myths are debunked about organ size and the consequences of masturbation. Basic female anatomy and puberty are discussed here as well. Many psychological topics such as male aggression, privacy, respect, homosexuality, independence, and changing parental relationships are also covered. Boys are more likely than girls to suppress emotions and avoid seeking answers from trusted adults. This book suggests ways for boys to feel good about expressing themselves. Changing relationships with girls and properly handling new sexual feelings are included here. Practical topics such as hygiene, STDs, exercise, and diet round out a chapter about the awkwardness that many teens feel in transition from childhood to adulthood. This comprehensive book is a colorful menagerie of bright photographs, illustrations, and charts. It provides a wealth of information about a topic that many youth are too embarrassed to ask about. Although many slang terms are covered, the book is tastefully written and should prove popular with all curious teens. VOYA CODES: 4Q 5P M J (Better than most, marred only byoccasional lapses; Every YA (who reads) was dying to read it yesterday; Middle School, defined as grades 6 to 8; Junior High, defined as grades 7 to 9). 2005, Allen & Unwin (Dist. by Independent Publishers Group), 128p.; Glossary. School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-This book has its heart in the right place, but it misses the mark, beginning with the condescending note of its very title. Price seeks to arm boys approaching and experiencing puberty with information that will calm fears and answer questions. He includes detailed drawings and diagrams of male and female anatomy and addresses every topic from sweat to semen, body odor to body image, masturbation to man-boobs. The text is augmented with "boys' and men's real stories about puberty." However, Price writes-on and on and on-in a chummy tone that intends to invite and befriend, but actually treats readers childishly ("Sperm-those tadpole thingies!"). The book is full of Aussie-isms (STDs become STIs, and just what is "bum fluff"?), and the referenced Web sites are mainly Australian. Bright photographs are splashed everywhere; when white type is printed on busy backgrounds, it is difficult to read. Stick with Lynda Madaras's tried-and-true The "What's Happening to My Body?" Book for Boys (Newmarket, 1991).-Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A companion to Puberty Girl (2005), this well-meaning volume will be handy for parents (who don't intend to talk with their children about sex) to leave around the house for their sons to read on their own. Emphasizing that it's not a book about sex, Price does talk about sex, but focuses mainly on the many issues and challenges of puberty. The tone is serious, straightforward and affirming, with the message that "Boys are born, men are made," meaning that boys can learn to make responsible and respectful decisions on the way to manhood. Topics include anatomy, masturbation, homosexuality, girls and emotional intelligence, always covered in a frank manner, with nice touches of humor. The format is colorful but busy to the point of being cluttered. Sidebars abound, and pages and text change colors, making the print difficult to read at times. Cartoons, diagrams, photographs and drawings contribute information and liveliness to the pages. A glossary and a list of Web sites make this a handy resource for boys. Great book for pre-teens and teens

I am a registered nurse with grandsons entering puberty. This book caught my eye and I read it. My 13 year old grandson also read it. It gave us much to talk about. This book is well written. It discusses anatomy and physiology in an easy to read format so teens (and pre-teens) can understand. The author uses stories from boys and men he has interviewed to enhance information. Some of the stories are serious, some are just plain funny. The author uses everyday language to reach the kids. He leaves no stone unturned. The book discusses changes boys can expect like hair and body odor. What I liked most was that the author addressed changes in attitude and thinking. Boys' bodies change when they become men, but so do their minds. This book talked about mind shifts as boys grow older. The author also talks a little about girls and what puberty boys can expect from puberty girls. Easy to read and well said. I recommend this book to all puberty boys!
