Overview

This new, fifth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, the first revision since the 1983 edition, offers updated information in four key areas: reporting statistics; writing without bias; preparing manuscripts with a word processor for electronic production; and publishing research in accordance with ethical principles of scientific publishing.

Two goals shape the changes throughout the fourth edition: (a) to encourage authors to write about their research with specificity and (b) to write about their participants with sensitivity and accuracy.

Regular users of the Publication Manual will find the chapters on editorial style and manuscript preparation to be comfortably familiar and a bit easier to use than in previous editions. Manuscript format requirements are more flexible and enable authors to take advantage of default settings available on most word processors.

The Publication Manual gives you all the information you need about the process of publication---from organizing, writing, keying, and submitting your manuscript, to seeing the accepted manuscript through production and publication. Plus, this fourth edition raises awareness of ethics issues in publishing and of choosing accurate, sensitive words in describing people.

Guidelines to reduce bias/ electronic media, legal materials/use of word processing/etc

    I Also Recommend:

    A bestseller because its required.

Most people aren't crazy about this book but have to buy it because it is required- in other words, people buy this book because they have to use the format and style it discusses in order to write and submit a paper. Other than that, I don't know who else would go out of their way to buy this thing. It's thick and not thumb indexed the best. Other psychological books readers may benefit from include The Sixty-Second Motivator.

Good book to have on the go!

I am currently in Doctoral studies and have to travel a lot. This book is handy to take along and use when I need to do research.

    I Also Recommend:

    Excellent reference

The APA guide has all that I need for my college classes. The index is easy to use and comprehensive, with cross references for differences in terminology. You do not have to read the entire manual to begin using APA format. There are lots of examples to illustrate the text.

    APA--The Confusion Lingers On

The manual should be a road map of the many ins and outs of writing in APA style. Unfortunately, the manual itself is set up in confusing and counter-intuitive ways. The information you need is in there, you will just have to search for it. The spiral edition is very handy and easy to handle, as well as being light-weight (very important for students!).

A Required Textbook for Many Post Secondary Classes

A reference book for scientific writers, the forerunner was a report of the meeting in 1928 by editors and business managers of anthropological and psychological journals who met to discuss the form of journal manuscripts and to write instructions for their preparation. Several revisions and editions of the report later, we have a fourth edition which presents explicit style requirements but acknowledges that alternatives are sometimes necessary authors should balance the rules of the manual with good judgment. It covers everything from presentation to grammar and punctuation and editorial style, footnotes, tables, figures, etc. Trish New, author of The Thrill of Hope, South State Street Journal, and Memory Flatlined.

    Publisher Mistake?

The publisher supplied a review for this text based on the 4th edition with a picture of the 5th edition. I found the 4th edition better to use although the justification for some of the changes from one edition to the next are not fully justified.
