Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Paul D. Stolley, MD, MPH (University of Maryland at Baltimore School of Medicine)
Description: This text describes all stages of producing and publishing a clinical research paper or preparing an oral or poster session.
Purpose: The purpose is to help junior investigators prepare their research results for presentation or publication. This is a useful goal as little formal training is received at school to enable the new investigator to do this well. The stated goals are met, and the reader learns a lot about how to go about publishing and presenting research results. Useful checklists are provided for investigators.
Audience: The book is designed for the beginning clinical investigator and the level of difficulty is about right for this group. The author is an experienced teacher and investigator and well qualified to write such a book.
Features: This book covers the organization of and different sections in a clinical research report as well as a description of how to prepare these sections (e.g., the abstract, description of methods, results, etc.). There are two useful chapters that go beyond publishing to discuss oral presentations and poster sessions. The author provides advice about how to choose the appropriate journal for the research article. A final chapter provides helpful suggestions for writing well, and the appendix lists the manuscript requirements for the leading clinical research journals. Innovative features include sections dealing with electronic publishing and how to respond to a reviewer's comments.
Assessment: This is a welcome addition to the small list of books available concerned with writing and presenting research. While the material covered certainly overlaps with the excellent book by Huth, Writing and Publishing in Medicine (Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, 1999), new material is contained in this book such as poster and oral presentations and electronic publishing. The exposition is clear and the figures and diagrams add to the clarity.
