Puccini: Madama Butterfly

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
This 1939 recording of Puccini's Madama Butterfly belongs with the relatively small handful of opera recordings that have achieved near-definitive status Callas's 1953 Tosca EMI, Klemperer's Fidelio EMI, and Solti's Ring Decca are some that come immediately to mind. Tenor aficionados should already be familiar with Beniamino Gigli's rapturous, honey-toned portrayal of Lieutenant B. F. Pinkerton, but Toti Dal Monte's Butterfly is even more impressive. We tend to think that aspirations toward dramatic realism are a new phenomenon in the opera world, but in fact, Dal Monte brilliantly conveys the naïve optimism of a 15-year-old and then charts her emotional growth with great care as the opera moves swiftly toward its tragic conclusion. The vastly underrated Oliviero de Fabritiis also deserves credit for his taut, incisive conducting. True, the 1939 recording sounds thin compared with the sonic sumptuousness of, say, Karajan's Decca set, but the voices ring out with surprising clarity in Ward Martson's excellent transfer. Naxos provides a fully detailed, track-by-track synopsis in place of a libretto and adds eight other brief examples of Dal Monte's artistry, including a marvelous duet from Don Pasquale with tenor Tito Schipa. This Butterfly has been only intermittently available, but thanks to Naxos, its greatness can now be discovered by younger generations of opera lovers. It is a true classic.
