    Tosca-Covent Garden-1955

If you¿re in the market for a definitive Tosca, look elsewhere. You may commence your quest and probably even conclude it with the justly admired Callas-De Sabata version. However, if you are an avid vocal collector who never gives a passing thought to acquiring multiple recordings of favorite operas, this was released with you in mind. Drawn from the archives of the BBC, this issue documents Renata Tebaldi¿s eagerly anticipated Covent Garden premiere in June of 1955. At the time, critics were effusive in their praise: ¿ An imposing presence, a fine voice and sure judgement of dramatic gesture¿ (London Times). Ferrucio Tagliavini, Tito Gobbi and conductor, Francesco Molinari-Pradelli were likewise applauded for their efforts. The mono pickup is reasonably well balanced although sporadically overmodulated,. All in all, a valuable release for Tebaldi devotees.
