Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
Title character, third grader Morgan is again involved in a typical situation with "Aldeen, the Godzilla of Grade Three" and the other members of the class. This new book is part of the "Formac First Novels" series. Mrs. Ross, the teacher, announces to the students that they are to present a play for Open House Night. She decides that it will be based on the well known fairy tale The Frog Prince. Morgan is to be the star as the frog. He is delighted as he really enjoys talking and likes the color green. Aldeen is selected to be the princess. During rehearsals, Morgan dominates every scene while Aldeen and Charlie struggle with their lines. Mrs. Ross reminds Morgan about teamwork, but Morgan is still convinced all the children think he is funny. Soon the teasing begins about the play's ending. When Morgan's dad reads the story to Morgan and Aldeen, Morgan is totally upset, thinking, "It is the grossest, disgustingest, unhappiest, most horrible ending I have ever heard." At school, the teasing increases and Aldeen flatly refuses to get near Morgan at rehearsals or even pretend to kiss Morgan on the cheek. On the night of the performance, Morgan and Aldeen provide a very surprising ending that brings down the house. Comical, perfectly attuned black-and-white illustrations add a great deal to this story. Children will laugh delightedly as they thoroughly enjoy this chapter book. Place this title on the first purchase list. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
