Overview

Pudgee isn't like other woodchucks. For one thing, he has a job! He works for the Dimples at their general store. Pudgee doesn't cause anyone any trouble, but today, trouble seems to find him! Pudgee has an important bag of groceries to deliver, and he only has a short time to do it. However, on the way through the forest, he discovers someone needing assistance and must make a very important decision! Does he stop and help, making everyone angry with him for being late, or does he ignore the person in distress and deliver the groceries on time? Pudgee Woodchuck teaches children that life is full of important decisions where the answers aren't always clear. What often seems like the right thing to some may be unpopular with others. It also teaches children such things as patience and that things aren't always as bad as they appear.

GARY HONDEL has enjoyed writing and drawing for as long as he can remember. He always knew that art was his calling, but he knew for sure in sixth grade when he won first place in his school's fire prevention poster contest. He was awarded three silver dollars! Gary has worked in such areas as advertising, editorial cartooning, and radio announcing. When he's not writing or drawing, he enjoys spending time with his wife and young daughter at their Florida home. Some of his favorite pastimes include watching British comedy, playing guitar, going to amusement parks, and traveling. Pudgee
Woodchuck is inspired by Gary's childhood memories of growing up in Minnesota and from living in
Alaska for twelve years as an adult. Both places are full of trees and furry little creatures! Alaska is also where he received a degree in psychology. This is Gary's first children's book.

I have read this story to my students and I have also read it to my daughter. I must say that all have enjoyed it very much. The story line keeps the students engaged and wondering what will happen next. The illustrations are fabulous. I would definetely recomend this book to anyone that's a teacher or a parent and it's a must in a library. Happy Reading!

I found the book not only to be entertaining but it also taught core values. The book would be a great read aloud. It talked about patience, confidence, and helping others. It had awesome illustrations and really kept the children's attention. I feel it would be a wonderful addition to any classroom library!!!

This is a fun and heartwarming story with a great moral. Not to mention the illustrations are excellent. The pictures are fun to explore as the artist put in many small and fun details. A great children's book!

I just read Pudgee Woodchuck to my class of second graders. They enjoyed it so much! The illustrations were very lively and kept the childrens' imaginations active. My students predicted what Pudgee would do to get the harmonica and what would happen to the man in the woods. Their predictions were right most of the time, but they were suprised too! I would definetly recommend this book. It would be a great addition to any Ground Hog's Day unit.
