Children's Literature
A part of the "Lands, Peoples, and Cultures" series this book introduces the reader to Puerto Rico's geographic and political formation, the Puerto Rican people, its cities and towns, its economy, its vegetation, and its wildlife. The book, which is easily accessible, is divided into 12 sections including a glossary and an index. A brief overview of how the island was formed, its political history and some statistical information about Puerto Rico is found in the first section. Following this the reader learns about the various mountain ranges and forests of Puerto Rico. The bodies of water and the smaller islands surrounding the island as well as the rivers, lakes, and other natural wonders found on the island are also discussed. The history and importance of many of the island's cities including San Juan, Ponce, Mayagez, Arecibo, and San Germn are described, and the importance of the Plaza in Puerto Rican towns and cities is made evident. The unique, tropical vegetation and wildlife found on the island of Puerto Rico adds a splash of excitement and wonder to the text, as does the section on the delightful culinary treats of the island. Included in this section is a recipe for the traditional Puerto Rican snack of cornsticks! Because this book focuses on the geographic and physical features of Puerto Rico, more colorful and detailed maps representing the island of Puerto Rico's political and physical features would be useful in developing students' background knowledge. As with other books in this series the photography accompanying the text adds to the richness and clarity of the information. 2003, Crabtree Publishing Company,
