Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Kathleen A. Murray, MD (University of Utah School of Medicine)
Description: This monograph from the NIH is the 103rd volume in the Lung Biology series. The two editors and 38 contributors (including many well-known radiologists with considerable experience) have created a very timely reference and update on pulmonary imaging, with a less extensive but excellent overview of cardiac imaging.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide clinicians and researchers with an update of current imaging modalities and applications in pulmonary and cardiac medicine, from the perspective of patient care and research.
Audience: This is written for radiologists and radiology residents, but it is also an excellent reference for pulmonologists and pulmonary fellows.
Features: This is an excellent review. There is a good chapter on the history of thoracic imaging followed by 10 chapters organized by diseases (immunocompromised patients, primary lung cancer, metastatic lung cancer, trauma, surgical complications, infiltrative lung disease, hemorrhage, emphysema, and lung transplantation). Separate chapters discuss issues of immunocompromised patients without AIDS and those with AIDS as well as interventional techniques performed by radiologists. A chapter is devoted to issues related to digital imaging of the chest, which is becoming more available and has pertinence as teleradiology increases. Discussion of pulmonary issues involves two thirds of this monograph, with the remaining third devoted to an overview of cardiac imaging, which is very good and emphasizes the newer modalities and their applications. The illustrations are excellent quality and numerous.
Assessment: The editors and their contributors have successfully created an excellent review of an exhaustive subject. To include pulmonary and cardiac imaging in a single text is difficult and they will probably be separated in future editions. There is a very real need for this comprehensive resource. This excellent reference would be useful on the departmental library shelf and in private practice offices.

Integrates clinical and research areas in pulmonary and cardiac medicine with current imaging modalities such as radionuclide imaging, computed tomography, and positron emission tomography, from the perspectives of both patient care and research. Section I, Pulmonary Imaging, is organized according to disease. Chapters review subjects including infection in immunocompromised patients, ronchogenic carcinoma, metastatic disease, and lung transplantation. Section II, Cardiac Imaging, is organized anatomically, and deals with areas such as coronary and pulmonary circulation, the aorta, the pericardium, congenital heart diseases, and cardiovascular intervention procedures. Includes b&w photos. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
