Editorial Reviews
From The Critics
Reviewer: Alex B. Adams, RRT, BS, MPH (Regions Hospital)Description: This book presents a unique approach to teaching by providing in-depth responses by known experts to commonly posed questions in the area of pulmonary/critical care. The 83 chapters are organized in 18 sections.
Purpose: The book intends to provide current expert opinion with some degree of detail in the important areas of pulmonary/critical care. It allows a reader to efficiently access information on pertinent issues. The book is not a complete, referenced review of any topic, nor does it make that claim. Therefore, the author's objectives are well met.
Audience: The audience is practicing pulmonologists and critical care physicians, yet the book is also an excellent opportunity for respiratory therapists to vastly broaden their understanding of pulmonary/critical care medicine. There are over 100 contributors. Several chapter authors are the accepted authorities in their field, often coauthoring the chapters with colleagues.
Features: Chapters are organized into sections such as evaluations, procedures, diseases, disorders, and special or surgical considerations. Each chapter is the same format, that is, responding to questions. Helpful features are the sections on controversies and the generous use of tables and figures. The questions posed are often the most pertinent for the topic yet, the reader may have other questions in mind. There is a minor degree of redundancy.
Assessment: The concept is unique and provides an excellent format for readability and rapid access. The book is, in a sense, a friendly reference. Other large reference books are much more comprehensive with citations and complete reviews of certain topics (Tobin's Principles and Practice of Intensive Care Monitoring (McGraw-Hill, 1998) and Principles and Practice of Mechanical Ventilation (McGraw-Hill, 1994). While this book lacks areas of "general" instruction, as a carry-with manual it serves a specific purpose.
