Overview

Lavishly illustrated, Punk on 45 is a graphic feast, capturing the artistic zeitgeist of an era when the picture sleeve was an essential aspect of any new 45 rpm release. 400 colour reproductions of single sleeves have been chronologically arranged alongside a pop-cultural history of the punk era, and a wealth of insightful background information. Many of these images are rare, the picture sleeves they adorn long since unavailable.

In addition to punk legends such as the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, the Clash, the Buzzcocks, the Damned and Siouxsie and the Banshees, this book also covers the eclectic New York punk scene that included Blondie, Talking Heads, Television and Patti Smith. Such diverse and influential cult bands as Magazine, the Gang of Four, Subway Sect, Public Image Ltd, Pere Ubu, the Cramps, the Undertones and the Fall also feature. All are relevant to the contemporary popular resurgence of punk rock and the new wave.

Punk's Do-It-Yourself aesthetic gave rise to cut 'n' paste creativity, and a new wave of graphic artists or designers such as Jamie Reid, Malcolm Garrett, Russell Mills and Barney Bubbles. Punk on 45 is the first collection of its kind, exploring the eruption of iconoclastic creativity that set the graphic agenda for decades to come.
