A Puppy Is for Lovingby Mary Labatt, Renata Liwska (Illustrator)
Elsie is about to have puppies, and Elizabeth is going to help. Her grandmother shows her exactly how to make the den for the dog and how to be ready when the puppies come out. After they are born, Elizabeth helps Elsie care for them. Most important of all, though, she helps her grandmother find just the right home for each, especially the very last one.
For Elizabeth, summer is spending time at the farm with Grandma and Elsie the dog. During this extraordinary summer, Elizabeth tells the story of how she helps her grandmother prepare for the birth of Elsie's puppies. After preparing the whelping box and needed materials, they wait for the special moment. As the birthing begins, Elizabeth and her grandmother assist Elsie and each new puppy. They help Elsie take care of all six puppies and provide extra special care for the runt of the litter. When the puppies are old enough, grandmother and granddaughter take great care to see to it that each puppy is adopted by a loving, responsible family. Mary Labatt, author of the book, is a collie breeder. She uses her knowledge about collies and weaves a tactful, brief description of the preparation for and care of the puppies in the story. The soft lines and gray shades of the illustrations add a gentle touch to the story of the relationship between a granddaughter and grandmother. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung

I sat in the rocker for long hours. And I watched Elsie care for her babies. She washed them with her tongue. She lay on her side and fed them. She nudged them over on their backs to clean them. . . Three times a day, I put five of the puppies in the basket. Then I let the little runt feed by herself. Once a day I held her in my arms and fed her a bottle. It was special milk from the vet. The little runt got stronger every day.
