Children's Literature"Why is red everyone's favorite color on Valentine's Day? Oh, that's not too heart to explain!" This is the first of nine riddles, all of which have some sort of play on words. It is a fun way for emergent readers to become familiar with the sounds within words. However, the riddles themselves are often flat because they are quite a stretch for the reader. After reading the question, the reader lifts the flap for the answer. Sturdy paper pages comprise this original paperback book in the "Riddle in the Middle" series. The cartoon-style illustrations have a story of their own. Two children and their dog take their art supplies to a friend's house and create valentines. There is another dog, a very fancy poodle, at that house. By the end the two dogs are sharing a Valentine's Day card while the children and a group of their friends have a party. This never rises above the ordinary and therefore it is not a first purchase for library collections. 2004, HarperFestival/ HarperCollins Children's Book, Ages 5 to 8.
