Barnes & Noble - EJ Johnson
With her sweetly lyrical voice and sparkling diction, soprano Nancy Argenta is one of the foremost interpreters of Baroque vocal music, particularly that of Henry Purcell. This double-disc set combines two Argenta solo albums of Purcell songs and airs: O Solitude and Halcyon Days. Containing 42 tracks and 152 minutes of music, this is an extensive compilation, and it displays Argenta's many wonderful qualities: her broad palette of tone colors, superb technical skill, and sensitive interpretations based on a keen textual understanding. But equal pleasure comes from the wide array of instruments used in the accompanying continuo role archlute, theorbo, Baroque guitar, ...

Containing 42 tracks and 152 minutes of music, this is an extensive compilation, and it displays Argenta's many wonderful qualities: her broad palette of tone colors, superb technical skill, and sensitive interpretations based on a keen textual understanding. But equal pleasure comes from the wide array of instruments used in the accompanying continuo role archlute, theorbo, Baroque guitar, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organs that combine in various ways to produce a delightful variety of ensemble timbres. An archlute accompanies the opening song, "O Solitude," only to be replaced by a viola da gamba when the song is repeated at disc's end, a striking contrast that gives the piece an especially doleful quality upon its return. On the second disc, several obbligato solo instruments join Argenta -- a pair of recorders, an oboe, and a trumpet in the martial "To Arms, Heroic Prince." But the highlight is the closing aria, the well-known lament from Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas, "When I am Laid in Earth," sung with moving lyricism by Argenta and exquisitely accompanied by an ensemble of strings.
