Barnes & Noble - EJ Johnson
Listening to Hayley Westenra -- the angelic-voiced, 16-year-old New Zealander -- naturally brings to mind a certain other teenage vocal prodigy who made her mark singing a mix of classical, traditional, and popular songs. And, in truth, without the path blazed by Charlotte Church, Westenra's overnight global success might not have come to pass. Yet like Church's, Westenra's rapid rise is no fluke: She possesses a lovely, radiantly youthful voice, and her natural, straightforward delivery on Pure, her first album, is simply enchanting. She embraces a wide range of material, bringing an unerring sense of pitch and effortless singing style to adaptations of familiar classical tunes: Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante défunte" becomes "Never Say Goodbye" and the slow-movement theme from Vivaldi's "Winter" Concerto turns into "River of Dreams," while Carl Orff's love song "In trutina" from Carmina Burana is as innocently chaste as you're ever likely to hear. Westenra also tackles such traditional tunes as "Amazing Grace" and a pair of Maori songs, "Pokarekare Ana" Come Back to Me and "Hine e Hine" Maiden, O Maiden, and brings other, more contemporary fare, such as "Who Painted the Moon Black?" and "Beat of Your Heart," into the blend as well. It's all disarmingly charming -- only in "Wuthering Heights" does she really let go, pulling off a full-on Kate Bush imitation. In a phrase: a Pure pleasure.

    where did they find her??

HOLY COW! This girl rocks like you woudn't believe and she's singing classical! I gotta hand it to whoever discovered this singer cuz it ranks right up there with discovering fire and the wheel. This CD - Pure - made me cry it's so darn good. I didn't care for all the songs but the ones I liked I could play all day and all night if they let me. I loved Who Painted the Moon Black and Beat of your Heart. I enjoyed Amazing Grace and Wuthering Heights totally. Her best of all is Pokarekara Anna -- now that is special sung in Kiwi. You gotta love this gal!

The best new female voice since Barbra Streisand

You're absolutely going to love Hayley Westenra's new album "Pure." Hayley has an almost-too-good-to-be-true voice the likes of which come along just a few times in a century. It would not be unreasonable to compare her talent with that of the young Barbra Streisand of 40 years ago. Every song on "Pure" is a keeper, particularly "Dark Waltz", "Benedictus" and "Heaven." When she sings the line "... turning me into the light" at the end of "Dark Waltz" you may well wonder if you just heard the most ravishingly beautiful human voice in all of existence. (The answer is probably yes.) There is no way to describe Hayley's voice without resorting to terms like incredible, astonishing, glorious and brilliant, but as you will see after hearing all of "Pure", they don't go far enough.

    Fantastic

Hayley has such a gorgeous voice (much better than Charlotte Church) she's definitely my favorite singer. "Wuthering Heights" is my favorite song on the album I also love "Dark Waltz", "Pokarekare Ana", and "Across the Universe of Time." You won't be disappointed!

    Absolutely Stunning!

This album is absolutely stunning. Hayley's voice is, in a word, "Pure". She breathes life into every note she produces. She is angelic, both vocally, and in her personality. God has truly blessed her, and she continues to use her gift well.

    Wonderful cd

Hayley Westenra has an amazing voice. I love the way she hits the notes. One of my favorite songs on the cd is "Wuthering Heights" because it's just so shocking to hear. I like her a lot more than Charlotte Church...there should be no comparison between the two since Hayley is much better.

    Simply Beautiful

Hayley Westernra has such a clear voice; I think she's better than Charlotte Church. I have deep respect for those who can hit the high notes perfectly. It's refreshing from most of today's "musical artists" who have their voices engineered. Classical artists have to be good; they perform live in operas without any modifications! ! A must have.

    Voice of an angel!

Amazing! Hayley's voice is like the voice of an angel! My favorites are Tracks 1 through 12. That's pretty much every single one of them! Her voice is so enchanting and these songs are just perfect for her! It can really inspire young musicians and singers who are studying classical music.

If you are an classical purist - this singer is not for you

I'm not sure why this young lady got a recording contract. Her voice is not unique, nor does she sing with classical vocal technique. She sings with a breathy straight-tone, has a bad habit of scooping, and her high notes sound pinched. Vocal prodigies are not so rare that you should buy this album.

    Pure

Hayley Westenra is on course to become one of the greatest singers who ever lived! Her range, perfect pitch, and clarity of voice are remarkable for a person of any age and experience much less a young girl of only 16 years. This is a must for any connoisseur of great music!

    A real singer, for once!

Hayley knows what can and can't sing, and I respect her for that! She "floats her notes" instead of screams them. I love this album, and hope that Hayley gets what she deserves: recognition.

    Pure

I first saw Hayley Westenra on a PBS special with Russell Watson last summer that originated from New Zealand. After hearing her voice, I immediately began my search to discover who she was and whether or not she had recorded any music. Unfortunately, I found no music at the time. Thank goodness the recording industry saw fit to change that. Her voice is truly amazing! I was only familiar with about 4 of her songs before listening to her CD and when I first hear a song, no matter how good it is, it usually takes me a few listenings to appreciate it. I can say without reservation that I truly love every song on this CD. It is a wonderful selection of songs for her magnificently clear, pure, crystalline, angelic voice and I highly recommend it to all.

What the music world has been waiting for.

This has to be the most beautiful album ever recorded. Hayley's voice is not only lovely to listen to but has a magical quality about it which pacifies the most tormented soul. From classical to contemporary to traditional Maori, it is all delightful and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I now have the UK, US, German, Australian and New Zealand versions and I will go on getting more as they become available. Utterly gorgeous.

    What an Unbelievable Voice

Often the song makes the performer a star. Sometimes the performer can make any song a star. That is the talent of a Roy Orbison, a Judy Garland, Now there's another to add to this list. This morning, for the first time, I heard Hayley Westenra's amazing voice on Good Morning America (April 12, 2004). There are no words to adequately describe her vocal talents; one must merely listen to understand. A truly awesome, in the largest sense of the word, talent. I went online to search for information on her albums, and found the new one, Pure, here, with sample excerpts. Listen, and enjoy!!!

Beautiful and special in its own way

This is a beautiful CD...I first heard of her through a commercial on VH1...Her voice was indescribable at the time...today, to be clichéd, I'd say it speaks like an angel and I feel like I've been missing out for the past few years while she has been making records. My favorite tracks are Pokarekare Ana, Beat of Your Heart and Wuthering Heights, Who Painted the Moon Black...Heck, all of them are AWESOME. You will be totally missing out on this international star if you pass this CD up! Her record title describes her voice and the CD overall perfectly: Pure.

The Best Album that hit the USA

Pure has got to be one of the best classical albums that has ever hit the USA. The title of the CD Pure describes Hayley's voice so well. As you listen you can hear her hit the higher notes with a perfect Pure Clear Tone. It has a very peaceful effect. Please support this amazing singer and buy her album today! Thankyou!! Elizabeth

    The next huge Classical superstar

I was a bit skeptical when I had first heard of Hayley Westenra - skeptical that such a young girl would could have such a tremendous voice. But I was definitely wrong; I was blown away when I heard her music. On Pure, Hayley's first internationally-released album, Hayley just takes off and brings the listener along with her. Co-produced by Beatles producer Sir George Martin, the album is home to many excellently performed tracks. My personal favorites are tracks seven through eleven. I recommend this album to anyone who enjoys Classical music. It is one album I guarantee you will not regret buying.
