Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
New age superstar John Tesh produces this spectacular album of orchestral arrangements of chart-busters by his peers. You'll find favorites here by Enya "Book of Days," "Watermark", Yanni "After the Sunrise," "Marching Season", Kitaro what else but "Silk Road"?, Loreena McKennitt "The Mummer's Dance", and pianist Jim Brickman "Picture This," "Angel Eyes", as well as tunes by George Winston, Mannheim Steamroller, and smooth sax man Kenny G. Tesh himself contributes two new cinematic compositions, "Song for Jennifer" and "Blue," but otherwise leaves all performing duties to a full 60-piece orchestra. As arranger and conductor, J. Eric Schmidt deserves credit for his lush and stirring renderings. Symphonic swellings flood over the horizon's hills on "Silk Road," while the feel of a spicy, smoky Cuban club is conjured up for Kenny G's seductive "Havana." Many tracks, such as "Book of Days" and "Jennifer," joust with athletic vigor -- highly typical of Tesh's own sports themes. Most touching are the two themes by Jim Brickman, but Schmidt's variations take the pieces beyond all the surface romance into new musical dimensions. The tension between the familiar and new keeps the album constantly engaging, and what a refreshing treat to hear "live" musicians all the way through! Thanks to Tesh for going the distance.

    Pure Orchestra is simply delightful!

I just picked up the Pure Orchestra CD from John Tesh, and haven't taken it out of my CD player yet! I have always been a big fan of John's, but this record is a cut above the norm. The orchestra sounds incredible! It's almost like a soundtrack to a movie that hasn't been made yet. Leave it to John to think up this idea!
