Father F.X. Schouppe, S.J. was an eminent theologian of the nineteenth century. He was the author of Purgatory Explained by the Lives and Legends of the Saints and The Dogma of Hell. His purpose with the latter work, though the subject itself is terrifying, was not to sensationalize or to horrify, but rather to instruct people on the reality of Hell and to excite them to a dread of losing Heaven. The Dogma of Hell was originally published in 1883 by P.V. Hickey, and Purgatory Explained was printed in the late 1800s with the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur.

This book explains what happens to a persons soul after one dies. It also explains that the pains of purgatory can be reduced for performing sacrifices here on earth. Most souls are in purgatory for many years after death but this time period can be reduced through the prayers of the living.
Roman Catholics will appreciate the fact that this book has been stamped with the 'Nihil Obstat' and 'Imprimatur' -- meaning that in the contents of this book there is nothing contrary to the teachings of the Church. This book explains very well -- with examples from the lives of the Saints - that it is a fact of divine revelation that the soul of every person who dies in the state of grace, but without having made sufficient expiation on earth for his forgiven sins, will undergo the very painful punishment and purification of Purgatory before entering heaven. This book is a must read for every Roman Catholic!!
