The soundtrack to Prince's loosely autobiographical rock-u-drama, Purple Rain, is a delicious fusion of musical genres, from the rock-tinged anthem "Let's Go Crazy" to the gospel-rooted title track. Moving seamlessly from the mindless pop of "Take Me with You," an endearing duet with the film's costar, Apollonia Kotero, to the sparse funk of the bass line-less "When Doves Cry," Purple Rain catapulted the androgynous Minneapolis native and his multi racial funk-rock band, the Revolution, into pop superstardom. The record, which sold nearly 1.5 million copies its first week in stores and garnered "His Royal Badness" two Grammies and an Academy Award for Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or a Television...

The record, which sold nearly 1.5 million copies its first week in stores and garnered "His Royal Badness" two Grammies and an Academy Award for Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or a Television Special, forever changed the sound and fashion sensibility of modern pop and R&B. With this flawless nine-song record, Prince proved once and for all that baby, he's a star. Deanna L. Martin
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Prince designed Purple Rain as the project that would make him a superstar, and, surprisingly, that is exactly what happened. Simultaneously more focused and ambitious than any of his previous records, Purple Rain finds Prince consolidating his funk and R&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and heavy metal with nine superbly crafted songs. Even its best-known songs don't tread conventional territory: the bass-less "When Doves Cry" is an eerie, spare neo-psychedelic masterpiece; "Let's Go Crazy" is a furious blend of metallic guitars, Stonesy riffs, and a hard funk backbeat; the anthemic title track is a majestic ballad filled with brilliant guitar flourishes. Although Prince's songwriting is at a peak, the presence of the Revolution pulls the music into sharper focus, giving it a tougher, more aggressive edge. And, with the guidance of Wendy and Lisa, Prince pushed heavily into psychedelia, adding swirling strings to the dreamy "Take Me With U" and the hard rock of "Baby I'm a Star." Even with all of his new, but uncompromising, forays into pop, Prince hasn't abandoned funk, and the robotic jam of "Computer Blue" and the menacing grind of "Darling Nikki" are among his finest songs. Taken together, all of the stylistic experiments add up to a stunning statement of purpose that remains one of the most exciting rock & roll albums ever recorded.

    One very talented artist

One of his very best! Prince shows off his talents from 'Darling Nikki' to the awesome 'Purple Rain' . Purple Rain is so dear to me that when I die, this will be played instead of some of the traditionals. Simply Awesome!

Man, words cant describe how awesome this album is. Im a 14 year old poet who mentally lives in the 80's and loving it. I don't have a favorite on this album because they all are great. I even stole my grandmas prince vinyl records. True friend. Fan is short for fanatic so...

    Best Album & Artist EVER!!!!

Nothing can touch this album. It is the greating mix of sounds which blended together rock, funk, pop and soul. Every song on this album is teriffic and these songs are so influential. An artist should strive to only make an album this outstanding. Anyone who doubts Prince needs to listen to this album and it will totally change thier mind. Plus he is as Fantastic an artist now as he ever has been. Prince is THE BEST!!!!

This Is What It Sounds Like When...

A rock'n'roll masterpeice, Prince burst onto the national conscious with a set of very powerful songs (who can resist the charm of Let's Go Crazy, the hypnotizing dance of When Doves Cry or the emotionally gripping saccharinity of Purple Rain?). Of course, any fan knows he'd been around for quite a while making great albums, but baby, this made him a star. Every album collection needs this gem!

Luv It, Luv It, Luv It!!!

Aside from the fact that Prince is my favorite artist (if I ever had to choose), ''Purple Rain'' to this day is an awesome piece of work, whether you're a Prince fan or not.

    Whoa!!

I was very cynical when somebody suggested to me, ''you should check out Prince, man.'' All I could conjure in my mind was this image of a short, weird little '80's dance star who used a lot of drum machines. Then I picked up this album. From start to finish, it's completely unfettered by any weak moments. There's the rocking, optimistic/nihilistic opening track, ''Let's Go Crazy''; the gorgeous title track; the guitar fury of songs like ''Computer Blue'' and ''Darling Nikki''; the simple pop of ''Take Me With You'' and ''I Would Die 4 U''; the nice ballad ''The Beautiful Ones''; and the funk 'til you're dead ''Baby I'm A Star'' coupled with the understated ''When Doves Cry'' (missing bassline and all). Together, this formula creates what is quite possibly one of the greatest records ever--certainly of the '80's, by any standard.
