Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The follow-up to the popular Pinkalicious features another full-scale color crisis. Pinkalicious, true to her name, still loves pink, but all her female classmates much prefer black. In fact, these narrow-minded girls have ostracized their former friend. Being blackballed gives Pinkalicious a bad case of the blues. Can she ever recover her hue? A cute story about peer pressure and being yourself.
School Library Journal

K-Gr 2- Pinkalicious, the insouciant little girl who loves pink (especially Pink Passion Fruit Paradise ice cream) is back and in trouble. The girls in her class tease her that pink is passé and babyish, and that black is the new in color. Although her family tries to cheer her up, Pinkalicious almost abandons her favorite color until a new girl in her art class helps her see that pink is powerful and perfect-particularly when mixed with blue to make purple. The lively cartoon illustrations spill across the pages mirroring the protagonist's feelings as she changes from a confident, imaginative child to a sad one who believes she is alone in the world and then back to her old spirited self, fortified by a new friend and a newly discovered color. As with Pinkalicious (HarperCollins, 2006), this story will be fun to use in a color unit and has the added attraction of dealing with feelings of not fitting in, which are common in a child's life. The book is a winner for most collections.-Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA

    Purplicious

My daughter absolutely loved Pinkilicious. So I purchased Purplicious without reading it first. ( My mistake) I assumed that it would be just as cute and entertaining as pinkilicious. However, Myself nor my 3 year old daughter enjoyed it at all. I thought that the word choices ( ugly, teasing, not wanting to play, name calling was a bit much for a young girl. My daughter was even a little afraid of the mean girls in black on the playground. I should have read it before purchasing. If I had I would not have bought it. I will continue to read Pinkilicious until my duaghter is ready to understand the concept of taunting and teasing, but right now I am enjoying the fact that she gets to enjoy her pleasant, easy going wonderful 3 year old life. I was dissappointed in the book.

    Disappointed!

This book is not nearly as entertaining or positive as Pinkalicious. It is negative and hard to explain to a 3 year old "what's in". The characters are mean and spiteful, something for a tween age book rather than a child's book. Skip this one!

    Questionable behavior

I returned the book as inappropriate for my 4-year-old granddaughter. What turned me off was the little girls being nasty and snide to each other. Even though the plot resolves and ends happily, I felt that the initial nastiness introduced and modeled behaviors that would be upsetting to a young child.

    Perfect girls book, two!

Purplicious was also perfect as it's another one of my granddaughter's favorite colors and the book showed exactly how little girls think and feel about such things as colors.

My 4 your old loves this book (well, the whole series actually). It is a wonderful and engaging story and really opens up a door for discussion on topics such as feeling sad, left out and different. You don't have to like the same things everyone else does.

This is a great book to use during character education sessions. It's a perfect selection to use when encouraging children to examine the importance of being true to yourself.

Very very sorry I bought it...

After reading Pinkalicious (which by the way my daughter loved it!) I wanted to buy the whole collection for my little girl... What a disappointement! Right at the first page you deal with children bullying and it goes totally opossite on what the Pinkaliclious books shows (that it is ok to like pink). My daughter who likes pink, had to listen to mean girls (from the book) making fun of who likes pink... I don't ever want to imagine my daughter being bullyied at school for any reason (favorite color, preference of music genre etc) and reading this book I just felt I was doing this to her myself! No kidding! Very Very dissapointed!

    Wow!

I am blown away by the perfect message in this book. Our 6 year old daughter has been verbally bullied by her classmates for the entire school year. She has been talking about being a nothing, wishing she wasn't born etc. We just got and read this book and she was bawling - she so related to Pinkalicious - she knows that Pinkalicious is creative, funny, lovable and just a wonderful kid. It make her feel like maybe she is too! For all those who have not experienced verbal bullying, this book may seem harsh but in the world of the social outcast it is right on! The fact that the bullies are never mentioned again is the greatest lesson of all! Seek and find a friend who is nice!

    What a disappointment-lost opportunity

I took my daughter to meet Victoria Kann after falling in love with her first book Pinkilcious. When Purplicious came out I grabbed it without reading first and took it to my 5 year old. What a waste. If you are going to write a book about teasing then have there be a resolution! What a great teaching moment lost! Do NOT buy this book, it is not well written at all. Goldilicious wasnt any better. Her newest book Silverlicious looks more promising but I will read it first!

    A Purplicious Sequel!

In Victoria & Elizabeth Kann's second book Pinkalicious' journeys continue. This time Pinkalicious learns that there is another beautiful color than Pink.

One day during art class, Pinkalicious is made fun of by two girls for her obsessive love of Pink. According to them, Black is the new Pink, and Pink is only for little girls. Pinkalicious starts to feel 'blue' even though she tries to stay true to Pink by writing in her Pink Diary that Pink is the best. Back in art class, she meets a girl who is painting a blue cake and asks to use some of her pink paint. She asks why and her answer is simple: Pink is the best! She uses some of her Pink to turn her blue cake into a purple cake.

The Kann sisters continue their simple message in a short and cute story: stay true to who you are and like who you are. They also continue their bright gorgeous pictures that create a new world. While Purplicious is cute and well written it stands second to Pinkalicious. Better still, a great book for any young girl.

    Condones mean behavior with children

Terrible book - not meant for any reader, regardless of age. There is use of words like ugly, references to children being so mean to not like someone that they won't sit next to her or play with her just because she likes pink. The character in the story even is scared to eat pink ice cream because someone might make fun of her!! What in the world made Harper Collins think this would be a good book for children?

    Delightful

Our 5 year old loves this book. It's simple to understand and she understands the message clearly. She enjoys the character and her cute and amusing ways to understanding herself. The colors and illustrating is beautiful, colorful and makes for a cheerful read. Lauren just bought Goldicious and she loves that book as well. This is one of the 3 books she has to read nightly before bedtime. Little girls will love this book.

    not her best work

My daughter loved "Pinkalicious" so much that I bought the two other books. I don't think "Purplicious" is appropriate for the same ages as "Pinkalicious" and "Goldilicious" and is not as good of a book. I really don't like the assumption that all girls are just going to be snotty and that this is how life is. My daughter is fascinated and somewhat scared by the "mean girls" because they are so different than her life experiences thus far. "Pinkalicious" and "Goldilicious" are silly and fun books; Purplicious is not.
