To understand the continued and far-reaching ministry of A. W. Tozer, it is important to know who he was, including his relationship with God. In The Life of A. W. Tozer, James Snyder lets us in on the life and times of a deep thinker who was not afraid to “tell it like it is” and never compromised his beliefs. A. W. Tozer’s spiritual legacy continues today as his writings challenge readers to a deeper relationship and worship of God in reverence and adoration. Here is Tozer’s life story, from boyhood and his conversion at the age of seventeen, to his years of pastoring and writing more than 40 books, at least two regarded as Christian classics that continue to appear on best seller lists today. Examining Tozer’s life allows the reader to learn from a prophet with much to say against the compromises he observed in contemporary Christian living and the hope he found in his incredible God. “The Life of A. W. Tozer gives a behind the scenes look at the man and his message. We see God at work with hammer and chisel to shape Tozer’s life into a vessel capable of influencing all who desire to walk with God. No single author has influenced me personally more than A. W. Tozer. I thank God for his influence on my life.”Gary M. Benedict, President, The Christian and Missionary Alliance

Meet the Author

Aiden Wilson Tozer (April 21, 1897 - May 12, 1963) was an American Christian pastor, preacher, author, magazine editor, Bible conference speaker, and spiritual mentor. Hailing from a tiny farming community in western La Jose, Pennsylvania, his conversion was as a teenager in Akron, Ohio. While on his way home from work at a tire company, he overheard a street preacher say: "If you don't know how to be saved... just call on God." Upon returning home, he climbed into the attic and heeded the preacher’s advice.

In 1919, five years after his conversion, and without formal theological training, Tozer accepted an offer to pastor his first church. This began 44 years of ministry, associated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA), a Protestant evangelical denomination; 33 of those years were served as a pastor in a number of churches. His first pastorate was in a small storefront church in Nutter Fort, West Virginia. Tozer also served as pastor for 30 years at Southside Alliance Church, in Chicago (1928 to 1959), and the final years of his life were spent as pastor of Avenue Road Church, in Toronto, Canada.

Among the more than 40 books that he authored, at least two are regarded as Christian classics: The Pursuit of God and The Knowledge of the Holy. His books impress on the reader the possibility and necessity for a deeper relationship with God.
Living a simple and non-materialistic lifestyle, he and his wife, Ada Cecelia Pfautz, never owned a car, preferring bus and train travel.

Prayer was of vital personal importance for Tozer. "His preaching as well as his writings were but extensions of his prayer life," comments his biographer, James L. Snyder, in the book, In Pursuit of God: The Life Of A.W. Tozer. "He had the ability to make his listeners face themselves in the light of what God was saying to them," writes Snyder.

    Good spiritual study aid

Tozer is relevant even today because he speaks the truth of God's word. "The Pursuit of God" is deep and thought provoking. It is worth a read. It isn't very long and if you break it up by reading one chapter a day you will find it a wonderful supplement to a daily devotional.

INCREDIBLE! For everyone, but not the week-kneed!

    This book was absolutely incredible!
One of the reasons it was so incredible is because it whooped my butt on several occasions! Just when you think you're doing "ok" or "good" you need to do a self-check - this book helped me do that, I look forward to reading it again and again.

    Excellent Book

Tozer was most-known for this particular book, and I can see why. It was clear and easy to read and understand. He helped me to see ways to have a relationship with Christ, or improve the one I currently have. I ordered another of his books, and it is very good, also.

    wonderful reading...

The book has clear insight into what it takes for a person to follow closely and seriously after God. Tozer will tell the reader things that he/she needs to do in order to better follow God like he knows you personally. The things he writes about are amazingly simple yet profound, and most importantly, undeniably applicable.

    Tozers deep thoughts cherished.

The depth of submission to Christ is outlined very well. Tozer takes the reader thoroughly through many steps explaining many arguments and issues in the Christian path to the heart of God.

    Timeless

I don't know how I overlooked this classic for so much of my life, but I'm so glad I have it now as a resource on my Nook! Loved the language which, by being written decades ago, has a freshness when applied to today's working faith. Get it.

    Tozer is a pursuer

Though much is very helpful for the Christian life, more than many larger volumes, the thoughtful will find things to pass over and things to come back to again and again. This should be in every Christian's library.

Highly recommended! A must read for those whose hearts are seeking more of God.

A.W. Tozer still leaves his legacy years after he wrote this book. I first heard this book on audio through my library and the second chapter brought me to tears on what hinders me in my relationship with God. I feel like I uncovered new insights into how to relate to God and what in my heart gets in the way. I have purchased the ebook, a book for each member in our small group and a study guide to use as a leader. You will not regret purchasing this book. It is truly a life changer!
