Editorial Reviews

Terrence Shaneyfelt
This book is an overview of basic principles of qualitative research, with some of the reviews found in the previous edition included. The book is written to introduce some of the main qualitative research methodologies and explain how they may be employed in the healthcare setting. Anyone interested in understanding the basic concepts of qualitative research methods would benefit from this book. In the majority of sections in the book the focus is on the three most common methodologies used in qualitative research: interviews, focus groups, and observation. Basic concepts related to these areas are discussed in easy to understand language. In other chapters the focus is on the application of qualitative methods in the healthcare setting and the analysis of qualitative data. The strength of this book lies in sensible descriptions of each topic. People with minimal prior understanding of these concepts will develop a sound understanding of them after completion of each chapter. The contributors also compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative methods throughout the book, further enriching the understanding of these concepts. Finally, actual research examples are given throughout to exemplify various topics. The editors only give a basic overview of qualitative methods. Anyone interested in actually using qualitative research methods will have to refer to other sources for a more in-depth understanding of the methodology. Denzin's Handbook of Qualitative Research (Sage Publications, 1994) is a comprehensive textbook on qualitative research methods that would be more useful for those interested in actually performing qualitative research.
