Description: This book describes the fundamentals of qualitative inquiry and major methods and includes an online component for instructors. The previous edition was published in 2007.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide researchers with the basics of qualitative methodology. This is worthwhile goal, as qualitative research has become recognized and valued as a research methodology.
Audience: This book is intended for researchers who are new to the qualitative method of inquiry, but it also can be a useful reference for experienced researchers. The authors are experts in the field of research and, specifically, qualitative research.
Features: For each of the major methodologies, the book discusses the historical background, fundamental elements, and expected outcomes. A companion chapter for each method includes critiquing guidelines. Examples of how each approach is used in nursing practice, education, and administration is provided. The book also covers the fundamentals of qualitative research, essential elements of conducting qualitative research, data generation and management, ethical aspects, triangulation, writing a qualitative research proposal, and disseminating qualitative research. A test generator with NCLEX-style questions and PowerPoint slides are available online.
Assessment: This will continue to be a valued book for qualitative research inquiry. This edition has been extensively updated, especially in the process of conducting qualitative research.
