From The CriticsReviewer: Diane M Tomasic, EdD, RN (Slippery Rock University )
Description: This book provides the essential information needed for a sound understanding of qualitative research methodologies. New to this edition are updated published research articles, emphasis on theory development, sampling tables, more information on rigor, and international research examples and articles.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an understanding of the fundamental characteristics of qualitative research methodology. This is a worthwhile purpose as qualitative research has been recognized as a legitimate method of scientific inquiry.
Audience: This book provides the foundations for the novice qualitative researcher while serving as a reference for the more experienced qualitative researcher.
Features: It covers the major qualitative methods and application to practice, education, and administration: phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, historical and action research. Also included is a discussion on triangulation. Finally, preparation of a qualitative research proposal and dissemination of qualitative research results are described. Basic steps of the qualitative research process are described. Ethical considerations have been expanded. Published research studies provide readers with an excellent way to see the application of each method. A sample of a funded research grant is provided.
Assessment: This book should continue to be useful to novice and experienced qualitative researchers. It provides a basic understanding of qualitative research and, more importantly, application of these approaches brings the concepts to life.
