Pranee Liamputtong, Professor of Public Health, Western Sydney University

Pranee Liamputtong is a Professor of Public Health at the School of Health, Western Sydney University. Previously, she held a position of Personal Chair in Public Health at the School of Public Health, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. Pranee has also taught in the School of Sociology and Anthropology, La Trobe University. Her particular interests include issues related to cultural and social influences on childbearing, childrearing, and women's reproductive and sexual health.

Description: This book describes steps in the qualitative research process from beginning the study to writing the report. The third edition has two new chapters on case study and grounded theory research. All chapters have updated references. According to the author, the book is easier to follow now that the jargon has been removed.
Purpose: The author notes that qualitative research methodology is becoming a useful and accepted tool in social science research for studying the subjective experience of the phenomenon and for understanding the meaning and interpretation of the data. This meaning/understanding cannot be fully attained with quantitative methods.
Audience: Beginning researchers are the intended readers. The book also is useful to students and seasoned researchers for reference. The author has multiple research publications and has worked as a public health research fellow.
Features: Part 1 deals with the fundamentals of qualitative research, beginning by introducing theoretical frameworks for qualitative research and sampling methods. Rigor and ethical concerns are covered in the second chapter. Part 2 covers the common qualitative research methods, with a chapter devoted to each method with the focus on data collection. Data analysis is also covered. The third part deals with the application of qualitative research and covers such issues as those related to vulnerable subjects, doing qualitative research online, writing a research proposal and report. The book concludes with a discussion of the new directions for qualitative research. At the conclusion of all chapters, except for the last, are tutorial exercises which consist of two questions dealing with the application of the chapter content. These are designed for the beginning researcher to go through the process of designing and conducting a qualitative research study.
Assessment: This book should be very useful to beginning researchers. It is easy to read and understand. In the next edition it might be useful to include a few examples of actual research studies to show the specific methodology and data analysis and interpretation. Overall, this is a useful contribution to the field of qualitative research.
